Sinclair dinosaur in Norman loses its head
http://www.tulsaworld.com/articleimages/2010/Thumbs/20100818_dinopic0000818_package.jpg
Dino the Dinosaur, a fiberglass replica of an apatosaurus, stands headless in front of Master's Sinclair gas station in Norman.

NORMAN — Dino the Dinosaur has lost its head, literally.

The 700-pound green, fiberglass apatosaurus has been sitting out front of the Masters Oil Co. Sinclair station for five years, but on Friday owner Jerry Masters noticed Dino had been decapitated. The apatosaurus is part of Sinclair Oil Co.'s corporate logo.

Masters says it was probably a prank, and he's hoping the vandals will return the Jurassic-era icon's head so it can be reinstalled.

Dino was chained down, and Masters says it would have taken at least two people to saw off the head.

Norman police took fingerprints as part of the investigation.

Master says if he doesn't get the head back, he'll consider replacing the dinosaur, which would cost about $5,000.

OK, that story just made me giggle. The headless dino, classic. I bet there's a trashy rental house near campus with new wall decor.

That's good - what's next, duct tape?
Is it rush week at the frat houses?

Apparently, this is a common problem among these large sauropods.

Vandals decapitate dinosaur at Durham’s Museum of Life and Science, head is recovered

This week the “brontosaurus” at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham was vandalized. Dino was a landmark, so a lot of folks in town are upset that the statue was decapitated, including yours truly.

"An act like this is just heinous,” said Mike Shiflett, a resident of the nearby Northgate Park neighborhood.

Northgate Park and the museum have discussed conserving the statue, which has stood beside Ellerbe Creek since 1967. While scientifically obsolete, the brontosaurus is fondly regarded as a Durham landmark.

I remember my mom taking me to see the dinosaur trail when I was a kid.

The good news the head was recovered and police identified those involved.

The most famous Brontosaurus head story, however, is from the very first dinosaur species to have an almost full set of bones mounted for display in a museum. This was the one found by Othniel Marsh, a famed dinosaur hunter of the late 1800's. I pick up the story . . .

http://www.unmuseum.org/dinobront.htm

. . . poor Brontosaurus not only got a name change (to Apatosaurus), but it was discovered that he had the wrong head, too. One item that was not found in the excavation with Marsh's Yale skeleton was a skull. Marsh mounted a head found at a different location to complete the exhibit. For many years scientists suspected that Marsh had gotten the wrong skull, but it wasn't until 1970 that two scientists, John McIntosh from Wesleyan University and David Berman of the Carnegie Museum, proved it. The head that Marsh had mounted was from another sauropod named Camarasaurus. The proper Brontosaurus/Apatosaurus skull actually had a slightly longer snout and looked a lot like the skull of another sauropod called Diplodocus.

Actually, scavenger hunts by fraternity pledges take place during Hell Week, the week leading up to initiation and that normally occurs towards the end of the semester, not the beginning.

I think it should be replaced by Eddie Sutton's head.
