I think the best music video ever is actually the video for Free as a Bird by the Beatles. The song and especially the video are way under-rated.

A-HA, Take on Me
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
Michael Jackson - Black or White
Genesis - Land of Confusion
Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World
All of them, along with A-Ha - Take on Me are best video ever candidates.

I'd put Thriller over Black or White.

I'd put Thriller over Black or White.Agreed. If, for no other reason, Thriller is a more enjoyable song.

It's a better video, too. Black or White just had that new "morphing" technology (heh - new at the time, anyway). Other than that, the video was really nothing special.

Mambo #5 isn't a mambo. It's crap with an electronic drumbeat.

Superposing modern celebrities into classic film backdrops has been done to death.
I like videos that are wildly creative. (And no, none of Nina's videos make the list, although the vid she cut with Apocalyptica is pretty close.)
Also, they need tons of cool imagery to draw out aspects of the song. (And no, almost no heavy metal vids make the grade.)
And there needs to be a story, but not an obvious one. A creepy story is best.
Hmmmm... top videos.
1. Sabrina, by Einsterzende Neubaten.

Watch the water dripping and the flickering lights. Perfect!
2. My Name is Mud, by Primus

Best bassist in the game. And a comic genius.
It dates me to say this, I remember when MTV aired w/o commercials and all that was on were music videos.
The best ones featured hot-looking girls, a hotrod car, and a hard-rockin' song. Examples of these were ZZ Top videos, which were all like that.

I enjoy the original, but this just makes me laugh. And I like McCain, but the rhyming of lines from some of his speeches with the song verses is pretty clever.

A-ha's video may be the best, the fact that it still holds up somehow is ridonkulous. They didn't know it, but they took a gimmick and made it look simple- that is how you don't date yourself.
Thriller is WAY better than Black or White.
Closer by NIN could also get a nod from me.
Is it wrong that I still think White Wedding is a great video? That is what the video is supposed to do, leave you with a lasting impression of the artist and you could ask pretty much anyone (under the age of 50) to describe that video and they could do it. It's pretty cheesy, but the visuals stick with you.

Liked the Arcade Fire cut. It went on my playlist.
Okay, I checked out Empire of the Sun. YES!!!! Excellent. (In fact, I have played it four times in a row now.)
The one dude looks like Marc Bolan (or Jim Morrison).
Know anything about them?
EDIT: Apparently the singer is Luke Steele, and he is somewhat of a musical genius (and Australian). His main band is The Sleepy Jackson. From what I found, it appears that the Marc Bolan look-a-like bandmate has disappeared. Odd bunch.
