I saw this bird this morning at the feeder outside my home office window. I saw it about two weeks ago for the first time and decided to take a photo if it ever returned. It's about the same size as the sparrows it hangs with, but what's with the red head and chest? Does anyone know if it's a particular species or is it some kind of mutation?

I bet my neighbor would know. At first I was thinking Purple Martin but...it's not purple.

Yeah but the females have aren't as red as the males. They tend to be gray.

Just trying to help out Leroy.

Male House Finch.

This. They are quite common and the population is growing rapidly. They are particularly fond of sunflower seeds.

+1 on the house finch. They're all over my parents' yard. Along with about 90 purple martins, a dozen barn swallows, hundreds of geese, egrets, herons, etc. etc.
