Wayman Tisdale Award For Top Freshman

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A new award for the top freshman in college basketball is being named for the late Oklahoma great Wayman Tisdale.

Organizers of the Wayman Tisdale Award said it will be presented each year to the freshman selected by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Tisdale died in Tulsa in May 2009 of cancer. He was a three-time All-American at Oklahoma before leaving after his junior season for a 12-year NBA career.

He was also a member of the United States' gold winning 1984 Olympic team.

Organizers say Tisdale's widow - Regina - is aware and "very receptive" of the award.

This is a great honor and I'm only sad that it had to come posthumously.

However, it's not new. The United States Basketball Writers Association has awarded a Freshman of the Year trophy since 1989. But I guess I shouldn't expect any better research from a channel that made Mark Rodgers their sports director.

Well, "new" award in that now it carries Wayman's name. Misleading reporting, but damn good they named the award after him.
