.....The NCAA's report, released June 10, concluded that Bush and his family accepted improper benefits from marketing agents while he played for USC.

As a result, the NCAA ruled that USC would have to vacate victories from late 2004 through the 2005 season, a period that included the Trojans' national title victory over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl in January 2005. USC also was penalized with a two-year bowl ban and a loss of 30 scholarships over a three-year period......

USC president-elect C.L. Max Nikias announced Tuesday in a letter addressed to "Members of the USC Trojan Family" that the school will return Bush's award to the Heisman Trophy Trust and remove "all jerseys and murals" that recognize the running back's college career by mid-August.

ouch.

I don't think we would ever disown a great player no matter how bad he did things. I mean if you want an example you got The Boz. So I'm not sure about the disowning of a great. If you are that age wouldn't you take what was given to you?

I liked this part of the story the best...

Nikias also announced that former USC quarterback Pat Haden (http://www.nfl.com/players/pathaden/profile?id=HAD484505) will replace Michael Garrett as the school's athletic director, effective Aug. 3.

Bush got what he deserved.FWIW I know many OU fans who disowned Bosworth and Charles Thompson for embarrasing OU nationally in print and on TV.Since they have both since aplogized, at least IMHO all is forgiven.

Maybe it's just me, but Boz doesn't compare in any way to the shat Bush did.

Yeah, the Boz never got the school in trouble. If anything, the Boz's actions are quite the norm today.

I wonder if USC has considered returning its copy of the O.J. Simpson Heisman.

OJ only killed people. He didn't hurt USC's chances of winning football games. He's good in their book.

Not disown a great player? How many times do you hear OU fans mention Charles Thompson? RS freshman QB of the 1987 team that would have been national champions if not for the season-ending loss to Miami?

Heck no. Boz had a bad-boy attitude, wacky hair, and a steroid problem. But he didn't get the entire team's wins vacated by accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars against NCAA regs.

I wonder if USC has considered returning its copy of the O.J. Simpson Heisman.

There was a blog by a USC fan that actually made some sense on the matter. The Bush thing was twofold. One was 'removing the taint' of Bush because of how his cheating directly impacted the football program. The second part was that by removing anything related to Bush and Mayo, USC thinks that it may help in their upcoming appeal to the NCAA (also believed to be part of the reason that Garrett is "retiring" and Haden is taking over).

In some ways removing the Bush stuff panders to the big donors who want to forget that Reggie Bush was ever in a USC uniform, and to some degree USC fans believe that Reggie Bush has chosen to forget that he was ever in a USC uniform ever since the story broke, and there wasn't a unified USC front behind him.

The Simpson matter is different in the fact that if the University doesn't feel that events that happened over 30 years after Simpson the player won the Heisman, in a situation and setting that had absolutely 0 to do with the football program doesn't warrant removing reference to Simpson then it's their "cross to bear". The author said his personal leanings were toward "erasing" Simpson as much as they are "erasing" Bush, but in the end it's up to USC.

I'd actually enjoy seeing Bush have his taint removed.

Was this before or after Petey had him there inspiring the players?

And while he did embarrass the university with his anti-NCAA t-shirt, Switzer said that he genuinely felt bad about it and didn't mean to. It was one of those things people do when they think they're doing the right thing and don't understand the consequences.

Reggie and Petey are both liars to the umpteenth degree, that is why they are being dis-owned. Reggie still acts like he didnt do anything when everyone knew what he was doing 5 years ago

My favorite quote from the weekend was from Spurrier regarding his team being investigated, it was something to the affect of "we arent going to be like usc, we are going to honest and open from day 1"

Hate to ruin the fun:

Yes it is, they were perfectly legal. Banned by NCAA perhaps but not illegal.
