Defining Song = ?

What is it and why?

PINK FLOYD

I'm starting with your consideration of:

"Wish You Were Here".

Opening riffs are absolutely recognizable.
Album title song.
Covered often, and actually pretty well.

"Money" or "Comfortably Numb" come to mind.

Yeah, I considered those...Money was an AOR hit and Comfortably Numb is definitely an anthem.

the wall pt. 2 hands down.

their best song was goodbye blue sky, imo.

i just asked everyone in the newsroom the same unloaded question... when i say pink floyd, what song pops into your head first? every single person said the wall.

Don't think you could go wrong with most of the songs posted here. Pink Floyd's such a well-known band with so many great songs it's tough to punch out just one "signature" song.

Depends on which Pink Floyd

If it's the Syd Barrett Pink Floyd it's probably Bike or Arnold Layne. I like Jugband Blues the best.

If it's the Classic era which was pretty much Meddle through the Final Cut it's Wish You Were Here, Comfortable Numb or anything off of Animals.

If it's the David Gilmore Pink Floyd it's probably Learning to Fly or High Hopes.

BTW there is some Floyd news. It looks like Gilmore and Roger Waters may soon tour together. Not as Pink Floyd since Wright died a couple years back.

Money. Bass riff is unreal.

Pink Floyd = Dark Side of the Moon. Didn't it ride the BB chart for like 15 years or something?

I have great story about the first time I watched The Wall...

My fav song is shine on you crazy diamond.

Us and them is a close 2nd.

Went to the Planetarium in Tulsa and watched Dark Side of Oz. Sold out all 4 showings. good stuff. The First 30 minutes are pretty amazing.

i wouldn't bother. a journalism degree pays the least of any degree out of college, local news is slowly dying, and the only people that are currently in this business that intend on staying are the really really vain ones who just soak up their local celebrity and care very little for the journalism/people's advocacy.

i've actually contacted an army recruiter about going back in, just to get the hell out of local news.

i was asked to speak to some journalism students by an old professor of mine that i keep in touch with and advised them all to think very long and hard about their chosen career field.

I remember being stoned out of my mind and hearing "Echoes" in my head, even though I had never heard it before. Only after I had downloaded it and listened to it a while later did I realize what song had been playing in my head while I was blazed and munching on Doritos.

Another Brick in the Wall. It was so unique and so vastly popular for years that some of the kids that sang it actually sued Pink Floyd when they were old enough to.

pigs or dark side of the moon

Yes? Which one?

There are three different songs on Animals that "pigs" is part of the title.

Dark Side of the Moon is the name of an album, not a song title. The words "dark side of the moon" are part of the lyrics to Brain Damage.

Beat me to it. Only with me, the first time I heard Echoes I was on acid. We were in a bedroom with the black light on all the old posters. Talk about freaky. What's funny is we listened to Cheech & Chong right afterward. From freaking the **** out straight to laughing until it hurt. "Bing. Bing. Bing. right on to "who is it? Dave. Dave's not here." Good times...

This is where the smartass in me wants to repeat the earlier question of "which one?", but since you mention the kids you obviously mean part 2.

I don't know that you could actually name a signature song for Pink Floyd. I would consider DSOTM as the signature album because of its long run on the Billboard top 100 and the fact that the cover art it one of the most recognized in all of music. But narrowing down a signature song...I dunno...

Shine On You Crazy Diamond is one of my all time favorite songs though :D

First time I heard of Pink Floyd was sitting on the edge of the bed in a dorm room - blacklights and posters - mushrooms - guy puts on Pink Floyd Oooma Goooma album - handed me the headphonse as 'Careful With That Axe Eugene' came on. End of story.

Pink Floyd didn't record songs, only albums. If only one song had to stand alone, I'd say Wish You Were Here. Too hard to pick a single from DSOTM or the Wall.
