Google as a search engine is pretty straightforward...at least, I never get any ads with it. Also, Google Chrome is a good browser.

There is this new search engine called google, pretty straight forward. Its pretty cool, works nice.

Really?

Actually, I just checked and Bing is pretty straightforward. Small bar of links on the left, huge search bar, and a picture of the Bastille for Bastille Day.

Do not let the name fool you, it is an excellent search engine that is more "private" than Google/others:

Google doesn't have the banner ads and all that, but they ARE loaded with "sponsored results".

I just type random addresses until I get what I want.

Use Firefox with the add-on "Ad Block Pro." It's free first off, and prevents almost any ad from showing, you can even block those annoying videos on SI, ESPN or NewsOK's respective websites

But can it block sponsored results?

Google doesn't have visible ads because it tracks every single thing you do and then sells that information to advertisers instead. Yes, every site has cookies but Google is like a cookie on steroids and HGH. I refuse to use their search engine or browser.

You guys still use the Dewey Decimal System? Puts Google to shame. :D

A Mazeppa sighting. Wow. Do you still make the salsa? Or was it BBQ sauce? It's been a while...

Meh. But it's no different than Google changing their logo for holidays. I was just pointing out that they have a relatively uncluttered interface.

That's what I've always heard, and I'm a real privacy freak,
and that's why I asked about the search engines.
Thanks for all the info

i'm not generally that concerned, but if you like Chrome, and don't like Google watching you, there is Iron:

Google Chrome doesn't have a drop down menu. WTF?

I Googled "search engine".

1. Dogpile
2. Alta Vista
3. Bing

Google wasn't on the front page, although it was the page.

Sure it does. There's two drop-down buttons at the end of the address bar. One looks like a page, the other like a wrench. It's all in there.

They must have added those recently. All it had before was just an X.

Those are a drop down menu of options, not a website drop down from what I can tell.

You mean like of bookmarks? I have a bookmark bar directly below the browser bar, and at the right end is a folder "other bookmarks".

I think he's referring to the little pulldowns that come up as an autocomplete feature as you type an address and the pulldown displays sites you've visited previously.

there isn't a file menu, etc... is that what you mean?

i like how little space it uses. on a 1024 x 600 screen it makes a HUGE difference

Yeah, also known as a drop down menu or drop down box. It's usually a button at the end of the address bar. Google Chrome doesn't have one. The only option I know of is to search the history for previous websites visited.

And, WTF is Mozilla going to fix their page freezing and Google search hanging problem? The newest version still hasn't got it right.

yermom
7/16/2010, 12:15 PM
oh, that's not what i was talking about at all. i never use that. i just start typing where i want to go, and if it's in the history or search suggestions it just completes it

i'm not sure about Mozilla. i basically stopped using Firefox when Chrome finally started working on Linux

GottaHavePride
7/16/2010, 01:01 PM
Yeah, firefox was turning into a huge memory hog for me. I switched to Opera first, but I haven't used it since I downloaded chrome.

Chrome has been acting goofy lately too

at least it's individual tabs/processes that go crazy and you can just kill those without killing everything else
