When we played the buckeyes in Colombus (the Uwe kick), they ran a pitch option to their left on the first series. As their QB got to about the hash mark, Hunt destroyed him. Hunt stuck out his hand, helped the guy up, and said,

"Gonna be like that all day. Don't you think you oughta pull a hamstring or something real soon?":D

Found a link other than OUInsider posts. Died of a heart attack. Didn't Rick Bryan die of a heart attack about this time a year ago?

I agree, but in fairness, Lewis could make a very strong run at it (if he'd stick around 4 years, which will never happen, IMO). Conversely, in fairness to DH, Lewis does have more games to work with than what he did.

Here's a good article from NewsOK with quotes from Switzer

Daryl Hunt, former OU player, dies at age 53

By Berry Tramel Oklahoman
Published: July 10, 2010

Daryl Hunt, one of the best Oklahoma football players of the Barry Switzer era and one of its most impressive people, died of an apparent heart attack this weekend. He was 53.

Hunt was the first black football player in the history of Texas high school powerhouse Odessa Permian. He was an all-American linebacker at OU in 1977 and 1978, then played six years in the NFL with the Houston Oilers. When he died, Hunt was head of a security for a Houston-area company.

Switzer, who recruited Hunt out of Odessa, Texas, was shaken by the news of Hunt’s death.

“Great kid, great player, great person,” Switzer said. “He was special in every way. People around him realized that.

“Doesn’t make sense. Big, strapping, healthy-looking. You’d never thought he was sick.”

Switzer talked with Hunt’s mother Saturday morning, flooding his memory of the home visit when Switzer tried to recruit Hunt.

Switzer long has called Hunt’s parents the most impressive he ever came across. Both were educators in Odessa.

“Oh my gosh, one of the toughest home visits I ever had,” Switzer said. “The drilling they put me through. They were into academics. They weren’t into football. They drilled me.

“Daryl never said a word. I left that house not knowing if we could get him or not.”

Hunt was a three-time all-Big Eight linebacker and remains the OU career record-holder for tackles, 530. He had three of the best six single-season tackle totals (157 in 1978, 159 in 1977 and 177 in 1976).

Major, major, bummer. Growing up in West Texas a few miles South of Odessa, Daryl is without question, one of my all time favorite Sooners and most admired.

My prayers to Hunt family. Daryl, go lay the leather on that big gridiron in the sky.

Yes. Rick died last July, I think. He was only 47. I remember his last collegiate regular season game well--that was when you guys nearly upset then no 1 ranked Nebraska. So sad to see still relatively young men and their lives cut so short.

I remember watching Daryl when I was in grade school growing up in NE Oklahoma. If I recall correctly, he wasn't that big, but his grit, drive, and competitiveness seem to more than make up for whatever he lacked in physical size and ability. Even in an era when the Big 8 was primarily a run- first conference, his tackle numbers were amazing. As good as two time Butkus award winner Brian Bosworth was, he couldn't break Daryl's record(going pro a year early didn't help either). My condolences and prayers go out to his family.

Damn. I remember him playing when I was at OU. Only 3 years older than me. Man. Starts weighing on you when people you are aware of or know start showing up in the obits...

RIP Daryl.

RIP DH. You were one of the great ones. I loved watching you at OU and for my Oilers. Man, that sucks to be gone that young.

Hunt and George Cumby were one of my favorite LB duos, right up there with Jones and Boz.

Around my house we called Hunt/Cumby "Rock 'Em/Sock 'Em".

I heard it from a guy who's son was a student manager or student trainer on that team. If it isn't true, it oughta be.:D

Lewis will have to average 138.5 tackles over the next 2 years to get to the record
