"Going to Russia and being, in effect, under control of Russia for our space program just doesn't sit right with me and I don't think it sits well with the American people, or won't, either," said Glenn, a former U.S. senator who rode the shuttle into orbit in 1998 at age 77. He turns 89 next month.

I don't like that idea either, but how much functional knowledge does Glenn have about the financials? I think we should cut programs elsewhere to fund the space program, honestly.

Since hes a Retired Astronaut and US Senator . It be my guess he has a decent handle on those facts.

Given Oilbama's quadrupling of the debt and doubling of the unemployment rate vs Dubya, I can't image he cared to much about the financial or economic impact of the space program.

Maybe it was just interfering with this golf game and WhiteHouse party schedule???

IMO, the only hope the human race has of surviving is to get off this rock. If we find a way to get out to other planets, then we'll have a shot at surviving the long haul. Otherwise, we're eventually going to run out of stuff here, be it fuel, food, room, or patience with *******s.

I think we're stuck here. Whatever happens to the Earth, we'll have to adapt until The End truly comes.

So we're doing it to save money. But this one person has special, hard info that says we won't save much, if any?

If he has this kind of compelling knowledge, and he's not able to show/tell everyone that, he's about the worst Senator there is.

We will eventually get off this rock if we fund the space program. Its just a matter of time. It could be 50 years, 500 years or 5000 years, but it will happen if we keep the space program alive.

Mars, maybe the moon. But that's just about all the options I see.

We will find a habitable planet out there somewhere.

Let's just try our best to mess up this planet, right?

So far as government spending goes, NASA should be near the bottom of the list in priority, right? Or does it actually provide an economic impact that I'm not aware of?

IMO, NASA would be better off we dropped the idea of manned spaceflight altogether for the time being. It's damned expensive to keep people alive in space, and more expensive still to bring them back in one piece. If and when we find a place worth sending people too, then we can work on the expensive parts. But for now, the best bang we are going to get from our bucks from NASA will involve unmanned spaceflight.

Better propulsion systems to get probes farther out faster? Don't need people in space to do that.
Probing the environments and conditions on other planets and moons? Don't need people in space to do that either.

There's a whole lot of space to explore. It's going to take a million times longer, and cost a million times more if we insist that exploring it means sending people there.

Oh, good-golly: all of that on that tax payers' dime! Way to go, big government! Good job, citizens. :)

it's not near as sexy without the Russians racing us

i agree with Glenn if this was a long-term thing, but it's just a stop-gap thing, isn't it?

Right.

And we need that money to do important stuff, such as promoting condom use among drug dealers in Boratland. (http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/68156)

Sometimes, people will arbitrarily pick-and-choose which government institutions/spending they like and which they dislike.

Hooray firemen and spacemen! Hooray public schools!

Boo government health care! That's communist! That's socialist! That's un-Amurikan!

Seriously...I watch Fox a bit too....but you should seriously think about turning the TV off a few hours a day or DVRing a good movie or something...lol
