The USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) carrier battle group is enroute to the Red Sea at best speed, presumably to face-off the Iranian flotilla headed to Gaza.

In case you were wondering, the below is the Truman's battle ensign. It is designed around Captain Harry S. Truman's WWI artillery battery's guidon. The "75" emblazoned thereon is the ship's hull number.

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab7/Okla-homey/Flag-Footer2.png

Truman's Battery "D", 129th Field Artillery Regiment, was one of three Guard artillery regiments attached as the divisional artillery assigned to the 35th Infantry Division (comprised of Missouri and Kansas National Guard troops). As such, Cpt. Truman and his battery were frequently employed well forward providing fire support for the advancing Mo-Kan infantry.

Truman's Battery "D" was equipped with four horse-drawn French 75mm field howitzers, which were the best in the world at the time.

During the Meuse-Argonne offensive, Cpt. Truman was detailed to provide fire support for George S. Patton's tank brigade and there engaged German field guns and was credited with either wiping out or forcing the permanent abandonment of two complete German batteries. At one point, Truman went rather berzerk and while firing on these and other targets, he disobeyed orders and fired "out of sector" against enemy threats to his division's open flank.

Truman's 35th Division suffered grievously in that battle, and the battery of the man who would later order the dropping of the atomic bombs was sited approximately 150 yards forward of where Patton was wounded in an area referred to by one artilleryman as "a cemetery of unburied dead."

Gotta love a ship named after a president with the built in slogan, "Give 'Em Hell". That's just allsome. And I hope they do. A lot.

Hubby (and brother--not the same guy, this ain't West Virginia) served aboard the Lincoln, theirs is "Shall Not Perish", which is also pretty bad***.

Truman is CVN-75. CVN-76 is USS Ronald Reagan, CVN-77 is USS George H. W. Bush, CVN-78 will be USS Gerald Ford. CVN-79 is apparently going to be USS Barry Goldwater. No plan for a USS "Slick Willie" or USS "Jimmuh" Carter, yet.:D

Considering who the c-in-c, is I don't anticipate any fireworks.

But it sure is fun to imagine lighting up those turkeys; Iran has been asking for it since 1979!

Godspeed, USN!

I think there is a USS Jimmuh, but it is a sub.

I think there is a USS Jimmuh, but it is a sub.

SSN-71, a "Seawolf" class attack boat. First USN ship named for a president who was still living. Carter is the only US president to have been qualified in subs. Interestingly, Carter is 30' longer than other boats in her class and has special manuevering devices. That 30' is a space that contains ROV's so she can tap undersea fiber-optic cables and listen in on what the bad guys are talking about and read their emails.

Ill bet a 100 that those Iranian ships have nothing but Relief supplies, No weapons of any kind, Not even a Starter pistol. Their main job is to stir up the Israelis. and try to cause another incident to embarrass the Jews.
Now if the get a few ships past the blockade, then they might sneak some **** in to em .

same thing happened in '96 when i was on the ENTERPRISE. saddam was acting up, so we got called to the gulf early. made it from the adriatic to the gulf in 2 1/2 days - with an 8 hour stop at the suez opening, and about 15 hours through the canal. as soon as we got through the canal into the red sea, we "hit it" again. most of the books will say the enterprise's top speed is "greater than 30 knots." trust me, it was WELL ABOVE 30 knots.

The Truman flotilla included 11 warships...bet that was an impressive sight sailing down the Suez Canal. No "fishing" boats were allowed on the water as they passed through.

This pic is from hubby's 2006 cruise on Abe. They did a joint exercise with the Reagan and the Kitty Hawk and the Air Force in the Philippine Sea. I would not want to see this coming toward me in a bad mood. http://i40.tinypic.com/ws1dhz.jpg
