June 8, 632 Founder of Islam dies

1378 years ago on this day in Medina, located in present-day Saudi Arabia, Muhammad, one of the most influential religious and political leaders in history, dies in the arms of Aishah, his third and favorite wife.

Medina

Born in Mecca of humble origins, Muhammad married a wealthy widow at 25 years old and lived the next 15 years as an unremarkable merchant. In 610, in a cave in Mount Hira north of Mecca, he had a vision in which he heard God, speaking through the angel Gabriel, command him to become the Arab prophet of the "true religion."

Thus began a lifetime of religious revelations, which he and others collected as the Koran. These revelations provided the foundation for the Islamic religion. Muhammad regarded himself as the last prophet of the Judaic-Christian tradition, and he adopted the theology of these older religions while introducing new doctrines.

His teachings also brought unity to the Bedouin tribesmen of Arabia, an event that had sweeping consequences for the rest of the world since the new faith encouraged conquest by the sword (i.e. convert or die) instead of peaceful missionary work.

The Saudi flag manifests a graphic representation of this Islamic "convert or die" approach. The words state "There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet." The sword beneath represents the threat of death to those who refuse to embrace Islam.

Because the language on the flag is considered holy, the flag is not normally used on T-shirts or other items. Saudi Arabia protested against its inclusion on a planned football to be issued by FIFA, bearing all the flags of the participants of the 2002 Football World Cup. Saudi officials said that kicking the creed with the foot was completely unacceptable. Similarly, an attempt by the U.S. military to win favour with children of the Prost region of Afghanistan by distributing footballs adorned with flags, including that of Saudi Arabia, ended in demonstrations

By the summer of 622, Muhammad had gained a substantial number of converts in Mecca, leading the city's authorities, who had a vested interest in preserving the city's pagan religion, to plan his assassination. Muhammad fled to Medina, a city some 200 miles north of Mecca, where he was given a position of considerable political power.

At Medina, he built a model theocracy and administered a rapidly growing empire. In 629, Muhammad returned to Mecca as a conqueror. During the next two and a half years, numerous disparate Arab tribes converted to his religion. By his death on June 8, 632, he was the effective ruler of all southern Arabia, and his representatives, were active in the Eastern Empire, Persia, and Ethiopia.

During the next century, vast conquests continued under Muhammad's successors and allies, and the Muslim advance was not halted until the Battle of Tours in France in 732.

Born in what is now Belgium, the leader of the Christian forces Charles Martel ("Charles the Hammer") is remembered for winning the Battle of Tours which has traditionally been characterized as an action saving Europe from the Muslim expansionism which had devoured Iberia. "There were no further Muslim invasions of Frankish territory, and Charles's victory has often been regarded as decisive for world history, since it preserved western Europe from Muslim conquest and Islamization."

By this time, the Muslim empire, among the largest the world had ever seen, stretched from India across the Middle East and North Africa, and up through Western Europe's Iberian peninsula (Spain and Portugal).

The spread of Islam continued after the end of the Arab conquest, and many cultures in Africa and Asia voluntarily adopted the religion. Today, Islam is the world's second-largest religion.

It's not "off limits." You just have to be careful with it. If you do something nasty or disrespectful with it, you could get blown-up or your head cut-off.

I'd think naming your ugly little hairy-faced swarthy ayrab kid "mohammed" would be sacreligious and worthy of a beheading. I'll bet 7 outta 10 little junior terrorists are named after this dude.

martel's accomplishment is right up there with the 300 spartans that held off the persian army at thermopole, thereby preserving western civilization...

and the saudis are so anal about their stupid flag that they got pissed off at mcdonalds for puting it on wax paper they used to wrap burgers with during the last world cup.

on a side note, i am now working on a cartoon of muhammed getting *** raped by a pig. it'll be free on youtube for all to enjoy.
