Sobering to think of all those red-blooded Americans serving a long way from home, even though we're at "peace" with most places. I for one know one guy who would rather be home, but I'm glad that when duty calls, there are those willing to serve, even if they disagree with/don't understand the politics behind it. We became a super power after losing most of our battles in the revolutionary war then getting our *** kicked for most of the War of 1812. The only big battle we won in the later war was after the War ended. We became a power because of the economy. We bought up all the other countries debts and became the richest country. And we were making things cheap trading with other countries. Kinda like China is doing right now. The capitalism thing made us a power not the military.

I'm pretty sure all of our bases in Europe were for back in the day if Russia started marching across Europe we would have several locations to strike at them.
