View Full Version : How High Will It Go?

2000 - My freshman year at OU. Face value on the OU/Texas ticket was $45.

2010 - Face value on the OU/Texas ticket is $110.

The ticket has more than doubled in ten years. When will it stop? At this rate the face value in 2020 will be nearly $270. Is this a joint effort by the Universities of Oklahoma and Texas to put the clamps down on the profits earned out in the secondary market?

The stadium is obviously still full, even though it seats over 90,000 now compared to the 75,587 it held for decades. You'd think the bubble would eventually burst.....

Until one of these teams suck it will continue to get higher...

It's been my experience that it's pretty futile to complain about the price of something that's sold out.

Yup. The only ones the universities have to keep tickets affordable for are students. Us alumni are only valuable if we donate money, and most of us will only donate money if it's for football, so the universities have gotta do what they gotta do during these harsh economic times of declining state appropriations and stuff to subsidize academics.

I have not looked at the fees attached to ticket prices lately, but it is starting to resemble tuition bills that I used to pay. Someday, the fees may outpace the actual ticket cost.

I wish tix were cheaper, but understand why they're not. And yes, it is totally a joint effort by the Universities of Oklahoma and Texas to put the clamps down on the profits earned out in the secondary market... and to maximize their own profits, of course.

Nope, there is a squeal factor built into pricing of tickets to athletic event. They grab the tail of the pig (fans wanting tickets) and twist until the pig squeals.

Does it continue on this trend if one of the programs goes through a downturn like Texas did in the 80s or we did in the 90s? Will 45,000 fans make the trip if their team sucks to pay $150 a pop?

Student OU/tx tix were $15 in the early 70's and if you had a good one, between the 40 yard lines, you could sell it for $50. Doesn't seem like much but you could only sell them to other students and who ever had a lot of money then?

Super Bowl tickets, I am told, will go for $750. Per. And it will easily sell out.

I'd much rather see any given year's RRShootout than SB, but I also recognize that there is a smaller audience of folks who agree with me.

I'd guess that the game would still sell out if the tickets were in the $200 range.

It goes as high as the market decides it will.

I sold my 3 tickets last year for $300 per, and they were $hit seats. So it seems the face is a lot less than the market price for them. A steal even.

Supply and demand 101:

High demand = higher prices

That's a very different group buying those tickets. 80% to 85% of Super Bowl tickets are bought by corporations. Several years ago when Dallas was in the Super Bowl they only had 3,000 or 4,000 tickets for their season ticket holders so I'm assuming Buffalo only got the same amount. I would guess those numbers are just about reversed for the OU/UT game.

fall of '89 - student season ticket (a piece of paper that got punched at the gate) - $20. basketball season ticket (same flimsy piece of paper) - $20.
