One of our fellow parishioners at church asked me about my line of work. While eating my Happy Meal (which I am told I really like), I told him that I teach college (which I have learned is the same as driving a school bus) and he took great interest. He then laid out some compliments about the nobility of my work.

I knew it was coming.

I am now the proud possessor of two CDs discussing ways of "making a ton of money." (Up to $80,000 a month according to the man.) I asked him what services or products he sold and he couldn't really tell me. Something about "concepts" and "opportunities." I asked him to describe his customers, and he really couldn't respond.

What's up with these multi-level marketers? I'm at church; I don't want to talk business at church. Leave me alone.

Sounds like an Amway pitch if I've ever seen one...and I've seen one (facepalm).

When I politely declined the "incredible opportunity" the former friend said, "Well Jack what part do you not like, saving money or making money?"

I said, "Having two jobs!"

A friend once told me that he just looks at them and asks, "Are you devoting your life's work toward becoming rich, or serving our Lord Jesus Christ." After that, they can't get away fast enough.

It's a pyramid scheme. they typically try and approach prospects that are typically pretty well off and have a few bucks to invest...sure there is some product they sell (usually heath related products), but of course the way they really make money is getting new people to invest into the company as a "partner" and tell them to do the same while getting percentages of everything they sell or people they bring on board.

Sure there is potential to make a lot of money, but it is probably few and far inbetween. Unless you are one hell of a salesman or an incredibly attractive person that can charm people into giving you their money, I'd stay away from this business venture.

Pyramid or not....you folks are really turning your back on some really great products. :D

And to think I wouldn't have a closet full of toilet paper and lotion I'm allergic to if not for Amway!

Thanks, Amway!

But... but they assured me that this was different than those evil pyramid schemes!

And that they too were skeptical at first...
