I would send you over to the eastern part of the state, BUT since I know you are going to Lawton, you should stop in Medicine Park and hang out in the wildlife refuge. If you are down for a little hiking, you might find an a cool shady place to relax or maybe swim in a stream.

Rode down last weekend. Long wait, but the food is awesome. Make sure you leave room for dessert. Get the cobbler with homeade ice cream. OH and just a reminder, they don't take credit/debit cards.

Beautiful web page that needs some real editing. "Hood Longorns"

And can they remove the word Texas? That spoiled it.

I am visiting a relative in Fort Sill and will stop by Meers.

I went last summer and got a Meersburger and followed it with the cobbler and ice cream. Definitely worth the wait in line. That place is awesome.

Big assed hamburgers...the size of a dinner plate...longhorn beef...good side homestyle dishes. When I was a kid they gave a seismographic reading with a time stamp for the time you walked in (there is a fault line in the whichitas).

Dunno about that, but be aware the whole f*ing state highway system is under construction.

You mean, Oklahoma is undergoing road construction and the projects haven't been finished in a timely manner?

I find that hard to believe.

Every small town you drive through...seriously.

Speeding tickets have always been a source of revenue for small towns. In today's economy, the tolerance is down very close to the posted speed.

Giddings TX, via Wichita Falls on the way down. Might take HWY 77 a good part of the way back.

If you come back up on Hwy 77 stop at the Turner Falls overlook. This will be around 45 miles into Oklahoma.

http://davisokla.com/gallery/images/d050320104433.jpg

After leaving there go a couple of miles north and stop at Fulton's Fried Pies. Now don't eat any fried pies just yet. Wait a while after you have stopped and eaten BBQ at Smokin Joes. If heading north it's on your right a couple of miles or so from Fulton's Fried Pies. It's hard to miss because it will be the place with all the cars parked around it. They are closed on Sunday and Wednesday so keep that in mind.

Be sure and spend the night in Norman at Sooner Legends Inn & Suites. :D

Turner Falls is about 1 or 2 miles from where I grew up. Around the holidays like this it will be pretty packed. But take exit 51 (if you take I-35) if you want to go. It is just south on highway 77 from there. Oh and the fried pies place is right there at exit 51 as well. I prefer peach or chocolate, but they have a decent selection most of the time. They have even had breakfast pies and mexican style in the past. And definitely hit up Smokin Joes. It is about a mile up highway 77 from exit 51. That place is good. And you will get plenty for your money. Trust me.

They opened one of those Fried Pie places in El Reno. Apparently they're good. I took a dozen to a SF tailgate, wandered off for a little bit and there was nothing but an empty box when I got back.

I'll be coming back on Sunday, so unfortunately I'll miss out on the fried pies. Do any of y'all know if they think they will be cutting wheat towards the end up next week? My wire reports indicate it should be a possibility, I'd kind of hoping to cross paths with the crew running the new Gleaner Super 7.

Sooner24
5/30/2010, 02:54 PM
The BBQ is closed on Sunday but the fried pie place is open I believe. You will probably need to go out west of OKC to around El Reno and head north on Hwy 81 to see the wheat harvest. Barring any large amounts of rain you should hit it just about right.

Cowboy Hall of Fame in OKC is kind of cool if you are into western art, heritage, etc.

Also, I always stop at a liquor store and buy Pocket Shots to bring back home to Orygone. We don't have them out here, and people just go nuts when they see them! I don't share either! :D

As you head out of Lawton, depending on which way you're going...the tiny "town" of Cache has a little "Indian Store" (that's what my boys called it when they were small). It's got cheesy and cute "Oklahoma" souvenirs. If you go, absolutely pick up one of those "Ozark Mountain Cookbooks*", a little paperback. BEST. DAMN. PEANUT. BUTTER. COOKIE. RECIPE. EVAR. Trust me on that. EVARRRRRR.

*No, I dunno why an Oklahoma souvenir store has an Ozark cookbook. And yessir, I'd kindly take a replacement copy of that thar cookbook, too.
:D

P.S. Stay the hell away from Altus. It sucks big fat hairy basketballs. Except for the AF Base.

I've lived in the Lawton area for over 8 years now and have never had a Meers-burger. Next time I have company down from the Norman area looks like I needs to take them (and me) out there. You guys have convinced me.

Just remember to take cash...last time I was there I was not carrying a lot of cash and happened to have my checkbook. There is no ATM and the restuarant is off the beaten path.

Well, I've made it to Guthrie, and stopped for the night. First time I've went down I-35 north of OKC in daylight. It's very pretty country. The wheat looked great all the way down. I know have a theory that every Love's truck stop have the exact demographic make up of customer's at any given time. How bad is passing through OKC towards Lawton between 7 and 8 in the morning on the Interstate?

I'm back in Guthrie on the return trip. I didn't get to make much for side trips in Oklahoma, but I will remedy that when my younger cousin graduates in a couple years, hopefully. I also learned that Chicken Express doesn't agree with my GI tract. Larry McMurtry used book store in Archer City, Texas is pretty sweet. The rest of Texas I could have took or left, but it was great to see my family and hang out with the Crazy Wendish folk down there. I found that I had built Whataburger up a little to much in my mind. Also, Paul's Valley, OK seems like a nice town.

Also, am I correct in the observation that Oklahoma gets Casino's and Texas adult book stores?
