View Full Version : 5 albums on an island...

PDXsooner

You're stuck on an island for the rest of your life, you've got an ipod with unlimited battery power and you can pick 5 albums to download...what are they? (no "Greatest Hits" albums either)

Pearl Jam - Ten
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies
Dr Dre - the Chronic
Still undecided on my 5th...

BillyBall
5/28/2010, 02:25 PM
Radiohead - OK Computer
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Beatles - White Album
Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

Just five!?!?!

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Pink Floyd - The Wall
The Beatles - Sgt. Peppers
AC/DC - Black Album
and....

**** YOU! You can't just pick five albums!

Meatloaf-Bat Out Of Hell

Any Hannah Montana album for when I finally decide to commit suicide from the shear boredom and loneliness of being on an island.

Crucifax, here is your chance to post the 200 albums you would take to the island. :)

As for me:

Shriekback: Big Night Music
Fields of the Nephilim: Sumer
Tristania: Widow's Weeds
Tangerine Dream: Exit
The Dub Syndicate: Echomania

For suicide, I can maybe hum "American Pie" to myself or (even worse) "Michelle" by The Beatles.

Animals, good call. One random Floyd album that I am a huge fan of is the Division Bell...kind of under-the-radar, and obviously sans Waters.

I thought Backspacer was great. But with Pearl Jam, it's much more about their non-studio stuff. You can download any of their live performances from their web-site, and it's the obscure stuff that isn't on their studio albums that is the best...by far.

As for Green Day, I think American Idiot was their best since Dookie. Awesome album.

Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
Replacements - Let It Be

As for the PJ/GD discussion, I thought Backspacer was solid- about an 8 and I thought AI was very solid. It can't be overlooked for what they aimed for and achieved. You either want them to fail b/c they are punk poseurs or you just don't like them. They aren't punk, nor is American Idiot, but it is a very good rock album.

What is a punk poser vs. a real punk? Is there some kind of group you have to join, or crime you have to commit? Just curious.

Leroy Lizard
6/4/2010, 12:57 PM
There is an attitude that goes along with punk that is hard to describe, but not necessarily hard to identify. The same applies to rock. Billy Joel is an example of a pop performer that fancies himself as a real rocker, but is in reality a puss.

Green Day is the punk equivalent of Billy Joel. Not a bad pop band, but as for punk they just don't have IT.

That's as decent of an explanation as I've heard. I think the other component is that people who consider themselves punk fans, or gangsta rap fans, or whatever the genre...like to see themselves as if they're in a unique "cool kids" club...and once a band becomes too mainstream and everyone likes them, these fans don't want to claim them because they don't want to believe that everyone else is cool enough to be in their group.

Let Slapshot summarize the issue:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMLPbkVG9o8

I am sure this will **** off almost everyone, but I think the "it" factor is why so few females are true rockers. Most of the ones I have seen are trying to pull off a rocker attitude, but it just doesn't come off as genuine.

However, I know of a few that can rock with anyone (Nina Hagen of Lizard avatar fame and Patti Smith come to mind), but the rest are meh.

Me personally, I dont like any artist or actor that uses their famous person platform to push their views on people. I think that PJ and GD used to have great music but lately it has all been saturated with political BS. That is why I dont like them, its just not good music to me. Some of it is entertaining music but it isnt good music
