View Full Version : The Duke of Dork

A conversation in another thread sparked this.

See, back in high school, I was the Duke of Dork. I may not have fully grasped that concept back then, but in the fullness of time, I fear that the conclusion is inescapable.

as evidence, I'll present my high school ride:

http://media.motortopia.com/files/16557/vehicle/495827ac7e0fe/tn_423x423_DSCF7685.jpg

except mine was in oxidized gold instead of blue. And didn't have the cragar 5-spokes. I rode on factory steel rims, with hubcaps that could be removed. By anyone. Anywhere. Or, simply by turning.

Think you can take the Duchy from me? I DOUBLE DOG DARE YOU!

Do I get a placement trophy? Mine was supposedly silver, but looked about this golden color, even when I washed it. I had three, sometimes four spoke hubcaps, depending on when I cleaned up and put the fourth back on after it decided to fly off. The speakers were all blown, the headliner was stapled up and it had a radio. Not a tape deck, not a CD player, just a radio... that sometimes worked.

Tell you what, though... it got to be a ****box ride from my sister having it before me... but that car made it to 204,576 miles before we traded it in... went through two women drivers (not a knock on women drivers, one was an old lady who hit everything, the other was a clueless relative) and three teenage drivers.

This is almost the exact color, sans the classy white leather top. It had an accelerator that liked to stick, and the shocks were so loose that a pothole was like sailing the seven seas.

The last two don't qualify for "dork" status. More like "Pimp"" status.

On a side note: I have to mention this...

When I got my ****box car at 16 years of age, I had to give my sister $500 for it. I took care of it, and was ridiculed for it. All the people laughing and saying mean things about me were all high and mighty because they were riding in 2-3-year old cars, some of them rather nice at the time.

I have continued to work hard and have since past bought four nice cars, including two brand new with no credit problems since past. I just recently found out via facebook that most of those "kids" are all grown losers now still driving those same now 12-13-year old cars. Let's just say a Saturn, a Pontiac GrandAm and a Chevy S10 isn't as cool at 13 years old as it was when it was 3 years old and was your first car. :D

Oh, Karma... you amuse me.

I give you...the craptastic 1980 Buick Skylark.

Just like this, but turd-brown.

The cassette player would speed up as the car sped up, and you could listen to the right channel out of all the speakers, or the left channel out of all the speakers, but not both at the same time.

Y'know, some of these really depend on condition. A vintage Beetle could be craptastic or THE COOLEST THING EVER, all depending on what kind of shape it's in. Same with the Chevelle and the '59 and '65 Chevys.

On the other hand, those Buicks...

Somebody find a picture of a 1963 Mercury Comet station wagon. I never went to high school, but it was my first car.

I broke the motor mounts in it doing donuts on the sand at Myrtle Beach. Drove it all the way back to Ft. Bragg in 2nd gear and no clutch (when the mounts broke the whole engine/transmission shifted forward and the clutch pedal was down on the floor). When I came to a red light it would stall out, and when the light changed, I'd just crank the key and it'd chug a little, start, and off we went. Copious amounts of drugs and alcohol were involved.

I couldn't figure out what the funny noise was until I stopped and lifted the hood. The engine shifted so far forward that the fan was chewing up the radiator. I found a hunk of wood and kinda wedged it between the engine and a crossmember and drove her home.

Good times.

That's it! Same color and everything.

Another thing I didn't notice was that the battery tipped over when I was doing donuts. It leaked out on the plug wires and when I got back to Bragg, the thing quit running. I figured it out and used my belt to strap the battery in. A full-bird colonol who worked at Battalion HQ drove a Ford just like my Mercury so I went over to his ride, stole the plug wires, distributor cap and rotor and took my bad ones and tossed them under his hood.

I'll bet he was one pissed off mother****er. Can you imagine where this PFC would be if he'd have caught me? Heh. What's funny is that I believe in karma, and I've pretty much been payed back for my youthful transgressions. I hope...

In high school I drove a '61 VW Microbus (van). 37 horespower and a 4 speed that you could run through the gears without using the clutch. Level steering wheel like a bus and a shelf behind the front seat that, with a screwdriver or church key you could lift the top off of and put 3 pints of whiskey in.

My high-school ride.

Only ours was missing a hubcap or two, had severe tree sap stains on the hood/roof, and the right rear fender had a different shape than stock.

Maybe we raced. I thought I was so cool because it had a CD player. It didn't look this nice, and it had a little 4-cyl. I had to turn the AC off to get on the highway. :)

I think I've posted pics of many of my first rides on here but the one that I should have never traded was my 2000 Expedition Eddie B. We bought it right before we made the run to College Station when Torrance Marshall saved the day and we drove it to Miami to watch OUr Sooners win #7. I know buying another one would never be the same so I continue to look for my next MNC vehicle to ride in when Bob takes us to #8. :D

Anyway...it looked just like this. Good Memories.

I traded it in for this....and don't get me wrong...I liked this ride but when gas hit 4-5 bucks....$125 for the fill up and 13 miles per gallon made it feel like a boat anchor around my neck so I sold her got an old beater and a Harley. Best move I ever made too.
