They are a real problem if you are a farmer or any other land-use owner and a beaver builds a dam across a creek that backs up enough water to flood your land. Why? Because by law you cannot trap, shoot, poison or in any way injure, maim or kill the over-sized rodents. You can destroy the dam, if in doing so you don't do any of the aforementioned actions to any little beavers that might be inside of it. However, even if you successfully tear down the dam, the industrious critters have a propensity for building new ones in the same spot and you'd be amazed at how little time it takes them to replace a destroyed dam.

In New York, if they find out you have been killin beavers, the DEC will pay you a visit and then you will pay them . . . a lot.
