That is the number of nuclear bombs would have to be used in a nuclear exchange (With Russia for example) that would throw most of the northern hemisphere into a nuclear winter. Learned that in one of my favorite undergrad classes ever: Cold War Science.

It ain't like we need 5,000. So it doesn't really matter if people know. Oh and when I took that class, there was an unclassified document dated somewhere around 2003 that had a count of every country with nuclear weapons and how many each country had. Those numbers are as closely guarded as they were before the wall fell.
