u know what i just noticed?

first half

4 of 5 were undefeated

can anybody make an argument for the 2nd half? or is it fair to say the first half was a lot better?

A lot of luck is involved in going undefeated. We didn't go undefeated for our previous 2 NCs in 75 and 85.

I think the first half edges the 2nd half of the decade. USC, Ohio State, Miami, Oklahoma then Florida would be the top 5 teams so the top of the first half is a lot better than the 2nd. I'm not sure Florida was the best team when they first won it and I don't think LSU was the best team that year either.

But then again maybe all those teams later in the decade played tougher competition.

I think the first half was significantly better myself, and not just by a little.

What jumps out at me is that there is way too much SEC in the second half.

Miami, FSU have faded while Florida has surged.

Bama has been resurrected. Same with LSU and both by the same guy. Lester is fortunate and will spin LSU into oblivion soon.

Nebraska, Colorado, and KSU have faded into mediocrity.

Penn ST and Ohio St are major players from the Big teneleven.

So OU, Ohio St, Tex have "maintained" while others have been up and down.

Miami and USC (excluding Oklahoma of course) were the two best teams of the decade.

Miami 2001 was the team of the decade, and maybe the best team of my football watching life (around 85 on).

Texas in 2005 was probably the second best team of the decade.

2000 OU had a great resume. The best team of the second half of the decade, 2009 Bama, was probably even with them.

If I had to rank them:

2001
2005
2009
2000
2004
2003
2008
2002
2006
2007

If you want to talk about most NFL talent on a college team, I can buy that one, but if one is talking about the best collegiate team in that time frame, it's 95 Nebraska & it's not close. That's the only one lately who never had a close shave at some point during the year ('01 Miami had 2 such games, vs. BC, when they caught a deflected pass & ran it all the way back just as BC was going in for the winning TD, & vs. Va.Tech, when they had to survive a 2 pt. conversion attempt). 95 NU's closest game was an early season 14 point win vs. Wazzu, a game in which they led by 3 TD's going into the 4th quarter. That year, they played 4 games (one of which was the national championship where they hung 62 on the gators without breaking much of a sweat) vs. teams who would go on to finish in the top 10 in the final polls. The average score? 49-18. CFB hadn't seen that kind of dominance for quite a while before that, nor have they since.
