Didn't he win as a player?

two coaches diverged in the forest. OSU took the one less experienced and that made all the difference :D

I thought Sherrill did win when he was at Pitt but he only finished #2. Was surprised to find out he was born in Duncan, OK though.

As for Schembechler, given that he coached 21 seasons at Michigan and did not win an AP/UPI/BCS title, does he deserve to be on a list of Best Coaches in that category? Maybe he should be on the list of Worst Coaches not to win a title . . .

There are a lot of really bad coaches who haven't won a title. :D

BTW, you could also say the same about Hayden Frey. (Although I have always liked him since he turned UT into the SWC for recruiting violations.)

Allow me to venture Jerry Moore.

Despite his lack of success at Tech, he has done a phenominal job at App. State.

Bo Schembechler

This one surprised me. He was well before my time but I always hear about how great he was. With a little research though, wow 3-10 in big bowls (Rose & Orange) and lost the first six. So was his whole legacy just on the fact that he gave Ohio State a good fight or what?

Well, that & the fact that he got his Masters from Ohio St., & was an assistant under Woody Hayes there for several years.

Oh, I'd also nominate Terry Donahue for this thread. All-time winningest coach in the Pac-10 & a HOF'er.

I think Frank Broyles won one NC at Arkansas {1964} NOT AP OR UPI> As for the best to not win one Snyder might be the best period..

I'm not inclined to criticize Bo over his Big Bowl record.

Depends on who you talk to. I have a friend who lives in Fresno and he says many of the locals want him out.

As a true fan of the Tide, it's kinda hard for me to say this but gotta give credit where credit is due.

Pat Dye would definitely be on my list --he had a pretty good run at Auburn in the eighties and probably deserved at least one of those titles after the 1983 season when Nebraska and Texas both went down in their new years day bowl games at the conclusion of that season, when the barners were ranked
3rd right behind both of them.

Michigan football is extremely overrated.

Also, in the opposite direction of the thread, Les Miles has to be hands-down the worst coach to win a BCS title.

Wait, I forgot about Larry Coker.

I think Mike Price has to be mentioned here. Getting Wazzu to a Rose Bowl is pretty impressive. He has coached at some of the worst outposts in CFB and had a reasonable amount of success. However, there is probably a reason he was stuck in outposts give the Bama debacle.

You've got to be kidding. Dont get me wrong--Mike Price is a decent coach, but I would not rank him as one of the best to not win a title.

A competent coach whose career peaked with us, but a very weird person. As a Bama fan, that's all I 'll say...

Bill Snyder took KANSAS FREAKING STATE from...

"by 1989 the school was statistically the worst program in NCAA Division I with an overall record of 299-509-41."

to one Texas A&M upset away from the BCS title game in 1998.

Snyder HAS to be #1 on this list.
