Found the link on the UniWatch blog.

I read about this. He basically had the entire game plan thought out with his QBs and they pretty much knew what plays were going to be run throughout the game. Basically the QBs called the game based on this mapping out. If it was 3rd and 1 they would run this play. 2nd and 4 this play or this play.

Bud used those figures on his weekly coaches show as well. Before digital graphics it was pretty much state of the art.

What software do they use now to design plays? Anyone know?

Anyone else think Bud's about to get burned by the Split-T for only having 6 guys on defense? ;)

"Bud and his little men" was a phrase we used when he was on the ABC college football broadcast crew. He would set em up and move em around as he explained what a team was doing. I was just a kid then and wanted a set of those little men to design my own plays . . .

I wonder who has "Bud Wilkinson's figurines" now? That would be a cool addition to a collection. Whoever has them, I wonder if they know what they've got there.

No, it's not Dr. Tom.

Is it "General" Jack Mitchell?

Today they've got so many things to help them learn. From watching a play someone made last week on YouTube, to PowerPoint, to maybe even a special football-specific software. Game film at the click of a mouse versus having to have it mailed in boxes, sort through it, rewind it over and over again. There's gotta be an app for that. :D

I did this when I was a kid all the time. Only our players moved on the field and we had different colored teams. It was called electronic football. And my Steelers would be my brother's Cowboys all the time. :D

My son plays with these things called "Football Guys" that look quite a bit like those. Except the QB has his arm cocked back, ready to throw the ball. I wonder what Bud would have thought of that?

Probably would have liked it a lot. His teams passed more than other teams of the era.

Some of them are on display in the Switzer Center. Page through here:
