Not sure if anyone has a made list yet, but how would the starting QBs of Stoops rank in terms of their recruiting ranking?

Past or present? Does this count if we choose the noobie?

Leroy Lizard

All QBs that have started for Stoops.

1) Bomar :D

If I remember correctly:

1) Bomar
2) Rawls
3) Bell
4) Jones
5) JW
6) Grady
7) Drew Allen
8) Hunter Wall
9) Sam
10) Noah Allen
11) Hybl
12) ENA
13) Josh

Notice that four of the bottom five rated guys have five Big XII championships, one Heisman, one BCS Title, a Heisman Runner-up, and another National Title Appearance. All of those guys are also quality people as well and leaders. Whereas, the top two are often ridiculed and are the butt of a bunch of jokes amongst us, and were incredibily immature. That ought to tell you something about recruiting rankings right there.

This should be every QB that this staff has recruited. I trying to think if I left somebody out.

If Bomar were not such a P***K he may have been really good. I can't believe Jason White wasn't even on the list. Was he a one star guy? Sam and Josh were cool under pressure. Josh didn't have the physical tools of most of those guys but he was pure ice against FSU.

Bradford had the WORST high school coache$ ever, he would have been a 5* if his coaching new anything.

While I haven't heard any QB come out and say it, Josh Heupel seems to work wonders with his guys once they arrive at OU... the lone exception being Brett Romar, who I think was only taking instruction from daddy football-wise (non-football wise, he seemed to be just thinking for himself, heh).

From ENA to Sammie to Landry, they all fake having the ball once they hand it off, they seem to know when it's a good time to scramble or throw the ball away, etc.

i don't think Heupel was the QB coach with Bomar though

Jason White was being recruited by Miami and Tennessee. I'm not even sure if Rivals or Scout existed back then so I don't now where he was ranked on any recruiting sites back then. But he was probably a high 3 at the lowest

Heupel was a JUCO and only a part time player. He was probably a 2 star again if there were those type of rankings back then.

Hybl was an all american out of high school to Georgia.

Bomar was a top QB out of HS. Based on his play I'm not sure why. He couldn't even take snaps.

Thompson was a 3 or 4 star guy. But I think he was that high because of his athletic ability.

Bradford was a 3 star

Landry was a 3 or 4 star guy.

So, can we establish an inverse relationship between recruiting ranking and success on the field?

ndpruitt03
3/14/2010, 04:39 PM
Except for Heupel and maybe Bradford all our QBs were fairly highly recruited.

Just ranking the QBs who started a game id go

Bradford
White
Heupel
Thompson
Hybl
Bomar

I think that's about right. You can pretty much put the top 3 in any order. But that's about right.

Really? I wouldn't think their recruiting rankings would have Bradford below Heupel.

Josh was Bomar's coach in '05, & to say that RB pretty much blew him off is an understatement.

That was a typo on my part, you're right, he left UA late in '05. It was the '06 pre-season that they did their most extensive work (if you can call RB letting what JH said go in one ear & out the other in the same second work) together.

King Crimson

Bradford signed early, in state, hurt his ranking. Jones was 4 star, he's a continual lament for CU fans since Hawkins made a late push for LJ. though, the CU peeps i know seem to have decided LJ wasn't that good last year. not good enough to win 3 games at Colorado good.

but, will go to bat endlessly for their qb's when it comes to not having a good OL.

Josh was indeed QBC for the Longhorn Bowl in 2005. The only thing Bomar kept ignoring was Josh telling him to slide. Some QBs NEVER learn or choose to do that (Tebow, McCoy, Sack Robinson, etc.).

I thought LJ was an elite 11 QB? Too lazy to look that part up.

This is pretty accurate, I'd guess. But Hybl needs to be higher. Tommy Grady should be higher than Jason White.

I'd go...

Rhett Bomar 04
---
Brent Rawls 01
Bell 10
Landry Jones 08
Tommy Grady 03
Keith Nichol 07
---
Nate Hybl 00 TRSF
Sam Bradford 06
---
Jason White 99
Drew Allen 09
Noah Allen 03 (i think)
---
Hunter Wall 01
Paul Thompson 02
---
Joey Halzle 05 JC
Josh Heupel 99 JC

Anybody think the left handed rotation on Landry's ball's may have caused some drops?

So, can we establish an inverse relationship between recruiting ranking and success on the field?

I ran a regression linking number of stars to win percentage (by game started) by QB. It wasn't even close to being a statistically significant explanatory variable, but for every star that the QB had, his win pecentage dropped by 1.963%. based on this finding, we should be recruiting only QBs who have less than 0 stars. :D

okay, only high school recruiting rankings

----national top 100----

Rhett Bomar 04
---
Nate Hybl - 98
Tommy Grady 03
Brent Rawls 01

------out of top 100-----------------
Bell 10, Landry Jones 08, Keith Nichol 07 - all ranked the same
Paul Thompson 02 (as an ATH)
Noah Allen 02
---
Sam Bradford 06
Drew Allen 09
Jason White 99
Hunter Wall 01 (ath)
---
Josh Heupel 99 (NR)
joe Halzle 2007 (NR)

notes - thompson/allen were the last year where they grouped the athletic QBs with the throwing QBs.
