Did anybody else ever get to see these guys?
Split Lip Rayfield is a band from Wichita,KS featuring Kirk Rundstrom (guitar), Eric Mardis (banjo), Wayne Gottstine (mandolin), and Jeff Eaton (bass). Early on, the group's gimmick was Eaton's homemade one-string bass, named Stitchgiver, built from the gastank of a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis and a piece of hickory and strung with one piece of Weedwhacker line.

Kirk was lost to cancer. RIP.

The guys can play. And while I'm all for bands using creative instruments (like Einsterzende Neubaten), the bass is sonically horrible.

Yeah, but it sure makes me smile.

I'm just opposed to using the tank from the Gran Marquis. Everyone knows that for outdoor events the Lincoln Continental's tank has much better sound qualities. The Hummer's is best, of course, but not many musicians can afford it.

I found it to ba damned interesting. As for the bass sound, I agree, but it's so funny it's worth it, particularly with their style which isn't exactly suited to perfect production values and perfectly tuned instruments. Not my kinda thing at all other than the occasional spanish guitar and the feel of an Irish jig on some of it, but they pull off what they are doing well.

Post kirk Split lip is still good, but he was so energetic. Up there stomping and howling.
Towards the end of his cancer battle he got out of bed, went on iv vitamen c and went on tour. Blew my doors off.
