I've been thinking about the greatest album I have ever heard. If stranded on the proverbial desert, which album would sustain me the longest? (Yeah, I know we've done this before. But I'm bore on a Friday night.)

First, the album has to contain great songs, with good lyrics and melodies I can hum. The Cars Candy-O had some great songs. Pick just about any Tool album.

It has to have great sounds. I want to be able to say, "Listen to that!" Pink Floyd's The Wall had great sounds. So did Tangerine Dream's Exit. This is the music made for headphones, with awesome studio engineering.

It needs good slow songs and upbeat songs. Led Zeppelin's fourth album had some great rockin' songs and some not-so-rockin'.

The musicians on the album should be first-rate.

Also, it has to have songs that those unfamiliar with the album will hear it and say "Hey, turn that **** up!"

Based on that criteria, my DID is (drumroll):

Shriekback, Big Night Music (the greatest album ever made)

So what's yours? And don't weinie about by listing more than one. That's cheating. What is the ONE album that stands above all?

And no compilations. I'm wise to that.

Fates Warning Awaken the Guardian or Perfect Symmetry or Dream Theater Metropolis Part 2, Systematic Chaos, or Octavarium.

Or maybe Iron Maiden Seventh Son.

Any others you want to list?

Crucifax Autumn

Any of those follow the criteria and any of those could be THE ONE I bring. I'm not one of those "favorite album" guys. You'll note I didn't cheat and have a double or triple disc set like the live albums from any of those bands, some of which are better than the studio albums.

While I'm not following instructions....

Riverside - Out of Myself or Second Life Syndrome

Fragile Vastness - A Tribute to Life

Savatage - Dead Winter Dead or Streets: A Rock Opera

Queensryche - Rage for Order

Shadow Gallery - Tyranny

All of those have enough ups and downs and different styles to keep me interested.

While it's pretty hack and painfully unhip, I would have to go with Abbey Road.

Nothing wrong with that...Or Sgt. Peppers too, for similar reasons.

Don't lynch me for this...but my favorite and most listened to album is....Chinese Democracy by GnR. **** the haters this is a brilliant album.

Hmmm... some of the offerings appear rather one-dimensional. Of course, Crucifax got around that problem by listing 40 albums.

Pantera, Vulgar Display of Power. I'm on a mother****ing desert island, I don't need easy listening, I need something to make me ****ing hostile enough to survive.

Hmmm... some of the offerings appear rather one-dimensional.As long as we're being insufferable ******s, to which proverb does your desert island refer?

I believe my choice avoided that.

Leroy Lizard

Yes, you did only choose one album. I'm not sure I would ever consider Guns and Roses multi-dimensional. Not even after shooting up strong narcotics.

That would be my same choice...or possibly the White Album.

It's a way better album than most people realize thanks to their ridiculous expectations.

Leroy Lizard

It's Guns n Roses. How good could it be? We're talking the Kelly Bundy level of rock fandom here.

Have you ever seen the Slim Whitman note-grabber apparatus? You don't.

I dunno, I had really low expectations and it met them. :)

You've listened to the entire thing? And not the crummy bootlegs that were coming out for the last 8 years or so?

Frampton Comes Alive

Oh wait, that's a double album and best of . . .

Leroy Lizard

Frampton was great.

I don't think I could narrow it down to just one album.

Probably The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place by Explosions in the Sky. Whatever it is, chances are it won't have any words.

this is kind of a silly question, though. i think there's a better chance that I'd have my iPod on a desert island than a cd and a cd player. I mean, an iPod fits in your pocket. A cd does not, unless you have much bigger jeans than I do. Or even tougher would be an LP and turntable. I can't stick to one album very long, anyway, unless it's brand new. I've been through seven albums today already.

silverwheels
3/7/2010, 01:32 AM
Plus where are you going to get the power outlet to plug in a CD player, anyway?

Leroy Lizard
3/7/2010, 02:18 AM
This island has its own power plant, which produces standard alternating current.

At a reasonable rate, too.

proud gonzo
3/7/2010, 02:52 AM
a power plant but no internet or radio? I don't buy it.

man, technology really spoils desert island hypotheticals

Leroy Lizard
3/7/2010, 03:07 AM
Remind me again why you would need the internet and radio to play your own albums.

proud gonzo
3/7/2010, 03:33 AM
i'm just saying, if there is internet or radio there's unlimited access to more than just one album and the limitation wouldn't be there.

Leroy Lizard
3/7/2010, 03:57 AM
The island is in a dead spot where no FM radio signals exist. And your Internet plan has expired.

3/7/2010, 03:44 PM

But what will you bang your head against on a desert island? A coconut?
