Im only 28 so I may not have the perspective that is required but lets take a look so far

Football 8-5

Hoops- Lucky to make the NIT

Wrestling and Womens bball are doing well but really, who cares

1992 was pretty bad. Basketball team was probably about the same as we have this year, but the football team was horrid.

I didn't realize Bennie Owen coached basketball.

Collier11

I just know that this is depressing, such high expectations out of both teams and blah...I guess this season answers the question to those who b*tched last year, yes, losing a natl title is better than winning a bowl game

JLEW1818

Yah, I'd say its "disappointing" expectations were very high for both football and basketball.

As far as I know Bennie is the only coach to win 100 games in 3 different sports(Baseball, basketball, and football)

Early 90s was just as bad. Maybe you can argue the mid 90s because the football team was so bad and the basketball teams were just good. But we also won a national title in baseball in that time. The early 80s was pretty bad also.

We won our bowl game and overcame key injuries to do it, not to mention bringing in a walk-on kicker mid-season.

As for basketball, they're young and learning lessons on and off the court.

Oh, and I care about womens basketball :)

it is like this at times for every team.....even us. we will be back strong in football next year for sure. hoops?? man, i just dont know. the way things are going for us its hard to say. we have a great young point guard but what else?
baseball, wrestling, womens hoops, equestrian i could also care less about.

Baseball starts in less then a week and is nationally ranked. Some of us do care about the sports that aren't football or men's basketball. Step off the ledge.

Im actually a huge baseball fan and your "step off the ledge" comment is a bit dramatic

Incorrect. Probably? Are you throwing out stuff like Nick without doing any research?

The answer to this question would be '65-66.

Football: 3-7
BBall: 11-14

Hard to find records for other sports, but a quick search indicated no championships were won that season in baseball, gymnastics or wrestling.

Baseball team went 7-20 that year (6-15 in conference).
Wrestling '65 went 14-3 finished 4th at NCAA
Wrestling '66 went 16-1 finished 3rd at NCAA

I've found a few that are at least comparable since the 1960s and I'm not going to count years where one was really good the other was bad. Like 1980-81 football team was 10-2 basketball team was 9-18 the record would actually be less than what we have now only because one team was really bad. Same with some of the OU football teams compared to the basketball program in the mid 90s.

This year(09-10)

Football 8-5
Basketball 13-11(unfinished)
21 wins
57% win %

1995-1996
5-5-1 football
17-13 Basketball

22 wins
55%

1968-1969
Football 7-4-1
Basketball 7-19

14 wins
38%

1966-1967
Football 6-4
Basketball 8-17

14 wins
40%

I'll throw in one more

1992-1993
Football 5-4-2
Basketball 20-12(15-11 going into the NIT)

25 wins
60%

This year could easily end up better than all these years listed.

Incorrect. The '93 team lost in the 2nd round of the NIT to Minnesota up in the Twin Cities. The '91 team made the run all the way to the NIT finals and ended up losing to Stanford at MSG. If memory serves, Tubbs was thrown out of that game.

2/14/2010, 11:26 PM
Well if you are going to say "Athletics" then you must look at ALL sports. Not just basketball and football. Yeah, our football and bball seasons havent been so great but we got a bowl win, should still make some form of tourney in bball and womens gymnastics is #1. Still alot better than titty tech, gAy&M, OSUcks, and on and on!

Okay still no big deal this season can still end up with a better record than that year the season stats are right just had the regular season stats wrong. The basketball team still has a shot getting more wins and having a better win % than that season.

Pretty sure my girl and I were up by your sister when they took that pic. The boy was pretty shy with the cheerleaders. Give him a few years I guess. This was about the time we had a gymnast go flying off the high bar twice in one run.

Man, without looking anything up, I gotta think that a year to 2 in the 30s had to be the worst for athletics as a whole. Can you imagine trying to recruit to an Oklahoma school in the dust bowl?

truthfully football by far is my favorite sport, but if it has OU stamped on it i will watch it, basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling, track and field, volleyball...

but i dont get upset nearly as much if they dont win, heh

i'm from a football loving family, and a football loving town, it was bound to happen..

What's funny about that is he is far from being shy when it comes to girls around his age (7 this month).

The thread says "worst season for OU ATHLETICS evar!"

There's plenty of success in OU athletics this season and plenty of great stories. Sorry that the only sports you care about aren't having terribly successful seasons(though if this football season was as bad as you make it out to be, we're doing pretty damn good).

Early 90s and early 80s were just as bad. Pick a year.

Baseball was good in the 90s, but you indicated secondary sports don't matter.

Actually the 1992 comment was pretty accurate.

Football was 5-4-2, Basketball was good early, ended up NIT. Lot's of high expectations in both. Very similar to this year.

96 and 97 could qualify too. Horrific football. And barely NCAA qualifying hoops. Though low expectations.

Alright, I gotta ask. Is the kid doing the "bloods" thing with his fingers, or is he doing the old in-and-outta-the-hole thing? Either way, kid needs a talking to...

OU fans care about all things OU. That being said, the emotional/financial investments we make differ from sport to sport. When OU football loses a game I have physical symptoms. I don't sleep well that night, I dwell on it way too much, and it depresses the hell out of me. When men's hoops loses I get pissed, but it doesn't keep me awake at night. Women's BB I never lose sleep over, but I like to see them do well, and support them. Baseball is closer to football with me in terms of emotional investment. It was the sport I was best at, and I still love me some baseball. Of course there's what - 50 or so games a year, so a single loss doesn't sting too bad, however, dropping a series to the whorns at home does set me back a bit. Wrestling, gymnastics, golf, tennis, soccer and track do not keep me awake, but I care about them and always check out the scores the next day.

Right there with ya except I view Football above all and basketball and baseball are about equal for me, then I go to wrasslin, womens bball, and thats about it
