The SEC used to go to more bowl games yesr after year repeatedly for much of the 40s and 50s whereas other conferences had teams that went every other year. SEC has a huge bowl appearance advantage.

Big Ten for some time used to get the nod for the national title back in the 40s, 50s and some of the 60s while SEC teams got jipped along with other conferences. Guess you can say it evens out, lol.

Big Ten has been around since the late 1800s while under a different name and later picking up Michigan State and Penn State. For as much history as the Big Ten has and since the SEC started in 1933...you would think the Big Ten would step up some.

But the Big Ten shouldn't be hard-pressed since we are all living in an SEC World. I am not defending the SEC or giving them props. I am just stating the truth because they have the trophies that matter.

2000-2009 Conference Rankings and Top Teams
1. SEC- (5-0) in the NCG: Florida (*)
2. XII- (2-5) in the NCG: Oklahoma
3. Big Ten- (1-2) in the NCG: Ohio State
4. Pac 10- (1-1) in the NCG: USC
5. Big East- (1-1) in the NCG: Miami
6. ACC- (0-1) in the NCG: Virginia Tech

(*) What put Florida on top over LSU is the fact that LSU's 2007 title had 2 losses. If they just had the one loss then it would have been a tie.

What was the cutoff date? 1936?

It is interesting to look at some of those old ones and realize how many of those teams are irrelevant for the most part now. Michigan won quite a few back then.

And Texas should not be the 1970 recipient since there was a post-bowl poll available, unlike in the earlier decades, so Nebraska should be the champion due to the UT big loss in the bowl and Nebraska's ascension. List the BCS or AP championships only.

USC DID win the AP title in 03, LSU won the BCS title.

BTW, I thought the AP was the gold standard for you guys when it comes to NC's. You only give us credit for the 8 that we've won from them as being legitimate.

No, it's just that we don't give Alabama credit for being named National Champions by the Tuscaloosa News every year.

AP was the gold standard until the advent of the BCS.

UPI holds the same weight as the AP.

Shark...you say list BCS and AP only well, if the UPI never existed then there would be no BCS.

Remember..... UPI always tallied the coaches vote....which became USA Today/CNN aka Coaches Poll which the Coaches are obligated to vote for the BCS winner.
