Thomas Middle School - Holdenville, OK

https://usspringpromo.acer.com/Campaign/SchoolLibraryMakeover/index.htm

Proposal:
Thomas Middle School (TMS), located in Holdenville, Oklahoma is in need of a school library makeover. The socio-economic status of this small, rural community is telling: third poorest county in Oklahoma with a Free/Reduced Lunch rate of 80%: 43% > than state average. Other demographics show more challenges: Education Role Models: 120% fewer college degrees than state average. Poverty: > 90% of Holdenville respondents on recent e-Rate survey. In spite of challenges, we are progressing: a new after-school program, the recent addition of Smart Boards in core-subject classrooms, a certified SmartTrainer on staff, etc. The Digital Divide, a catchphrase of the '90s still applies at TMS: Internet-connected computers are rare in TMS student homes; 243 TMS students use the tech lab less than 1-hour/week;The TMS Library has NO student-use computers. With minimal access at home and school, student technology-use skills do not meet the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for students. They simply have not used a computer enough to be proficient. Moreover, ISTE's Educational Technology-Information Literacy benchmarks for the 21st Century are not being met. To meet ET-IL, students and teachers must use the technology for student-centered, project-based learning. Technology can also accommodate differences in ability. TMS students must have regular access to computers for on-line research opportunities as well. To illustrate the TMS commitment, in-kind support will include furniture, headphones, software and high-quality professional development. TMS will schedule research classes in the library, technology time during after-school program hours, and provide technology-training opportunities for school patrons. An Acer/Intel School Library Makeover will have a dramatic effect on the success of TMS students in the 21st Century.

If they pour concrete, write your name in it, then chisel up the slab and steal it back 50 years from now.
