I don't want to join some AV nerd forum, so help me out, South Ovaltinian techie-types.

Why won't my LCD TV display PS1 games played on a PS2?

If I try to run a PS1 game on the PS2 (hooked up to an LCD TV by component cables) it loads the boot screen with the old PS logo but then just goes black and says "not supported." It does this hooked up to an LG 55" 1080p LCD and an Insignia 32" 720p LCD. These same TVs will display other 480i standard def stuff fine (e.g. other old-skool video game systems) including PS2 software.

PS1 games are displayed fine if you run them on a real PS1 hooked up to the same TVs. Likewise if played on the PS3. What's the deal???

Sounds like it's something to do with the PS2. Either the emulation isn't working right or there's something in the way it presents SD video to the TVs. Can you get it to display on any TV at all?

Yep. They play fine on a real PS1 or on the PS3.

No, I mean can you get the PS2 to play PS1 games on any other TVs or is it a universal thing? I would think if you've tried it on two different sets and get the same error it's something with the PS2.

Oh, yeah, it used to play them fine on a big CRT, but now all I have are the LCDs.

I want to say the PS2 would play PS1 games on an older 720p LCD I had previously, but maybe I'm misremembering.

Hmm... Might look into problems with the PS2's upscaling abilities. I know the PS3 does it, but I don't know about the PS2.

sounds kinda like this: http://www.avforums.com/forums/ps2/739934-playing-ps1-games-using-ps2-lcd-tv.html

have you looked at the aspect ratios and stuff like they mention?

Certain PS3's dont' play PS2 games. Certain PS2's probably don't play PS1 games. All PS1's don't play PS0 games. Don't even bother trying to play PS-1 games on a PS0.

Yeah, very much like that. Thanks a lot. I'll have to try diff't cables (though I'd hate to hook the PS2 up to an LCD with less than component) and fiddle with the TV settings.

NP- I would think that the TV upscales whatever its given to its own native resolution (1080p.) I don't know.

Certain PS2's probably don't play PS1 games.

A small number of PS games have compatibility problems (bugs and whatnot) playing on the PS2 but, for the most part, all PS2s play PS software. I've tried this with both an early-model fat PS2 and a slim. Same weirdness.

True... but all the new PSP's don't play PSP games.

That thing is a joke, wrapped in a shot in the foot, and all covered with fail sauce.

Next question: why is it when I play chess on a checkerboard the pieces are all out of focus?

theres no such thing as a ps1... its just a playstation. all ps2s will play ps games, all ps3s will play both.

if you have experienced otherwise, you should have taken your console back for a new one.

t all ps3s will play both.

Not technically true. There are some games that only work right on PS3s that have the Emotion chip. Not all do. Unless they've significantly upgraded the firmware, I guess.

Nope, there was. The PS1 (or PSOne, as it was officially called) was the little remodel of the original PlayStation. Same console/software, just streamlined innards in a smaller case.

The original PS3s play PS2 and "PS1" software; later models removed the hardware needed to play PS2 games but still play PS1 software through emulation.

I still get a kick out of playing the original Sega Genesis on my 42" LCD.

Technology of today meets old school gaming. NBA Jam never looked better. :D

Hey when I was young my babysitter still had a working Atari. I played the crap out of that thing! Something about Pong that is so simple, yet still fun.

When I was young I had a new-in-the-box Atari with the wood grain chassis.
