Above would be my predictions as if it's not obvious.

James Cameron (Avatar) vs. Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker)

Ex-Hubby vs Ex-Wife....Ahhh, drama at it's finest :)

The Cove will win feature doc, Mo'Nique will win supporting, The Young Victoria will win costume (name a year a period piece didn't win it), and the White Ribbon will win foreign. I hope Avatar doesn't win, but it wouldn't be the first time James Cameron took a good, but not great film that was completely buoyed by effects and won, although I did think Avatar was a much better movie than Titanic.

BTW, we watched "Precious" over the weekend, and Mo'Nique absolutely deserves the award. Mariah Carey was also really, really surprisingly good in it. The movie itself is depressing as hell, although it's a very good movie. Not sure if it's best picture worthy, but it's certainly worth watching.

I think Julie and Julia deserves a special Oscar for best use of butter in a motion picture.

I saw that they had Inglorious Basterds on Dish PPV. I have a coupon for a couple free movies. Is this just another one of QTs stupid kill everything in site as gorily as possible flicks or is there actually any substance to this thing? I don't wanna waste a free movie ticket here.

Its revisionist history in QT style, it is highly entertaining and quite gruesome in a few spots but not that many honestly. If you want to see a different twist on the story of Hitler that entertains it is good stuff.

But if Christoph Waltz doesn't win for best supporting actor, the Oscars are a farce. I guess I should look up the odds.

I personally thought it was less violent than all of his other movies, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't like his 100% perfect track record.

As for the number of best picture nominees, they doubled it beginning this year. It is an attempt to get more mainstream crap movies on there so more stupid people will watch the awards show.

I'm guessing the reason you hated Kill Bill is because a you were forced to suspend disbelief while a chick killed 400 dudes with a sword and what not.

Inglorious Basterds is not that. It's violent, but the violence means something. It's over the top tense, but the tension means something.

I tell you what. I guarantee that you will like it...and by guaranteeing it, I mean if somehow I am wrong, and you give an honest reason why, I will then immediately admit that you were completely incorrect.

District 9 for best picture is epic fail. IB, Vampire Assistant, Potter, Star Trek, and every other movie I saw this year was better than that load of crap.

Completely agree. That was the best movie that I have seen in awhile. The only valid reason I have heard about people not liking it is that is was violent, which it is, but alot of good movies are.

I'd go for it Dean.

I didn't think District 9 was bad. It wasn't best picture good though. Increasing the nominations to 10 is a really stupid move. They should have maybe made it "up to 10" so they could go over 5 in years that have an unusually high number of good movies. This year they may have had over 5, but not the over 5 they picked.

Inglourious was my favorite movie in years. The dialogue alone was outstanding, Kind of the anti-Episode I, II, III.

Christoph Waltz for supporting actor is the biggest slamdunk in history. If he doesn't win, I'll never watch again. Just like the Grammys after Jethro Tull won best Metal.

Inglorious Basterds was okay. Tepid at parts. And highly overrated. The best parts of the entire movie were the French farmhouse and the French alehouse. That's it.

Not one of Tarantino's better efforts.

District 9, on the other hand, was FANTASTIC. It was original, it was topical, it made you think and it took you to a completely different reality. It may not be "Best Picture Worthy," but it certainly deserves the nomination.

If it makes you feel better I thought A Serious Man blew it away. What I enjoyed about Basterds more than anything were the strong performances out of most of the actors. Pitt not so much, but the rest really did a great job.

But you know LAS, if you're like me and you consider Kill Bill to be one big movie, Basterds is Tarantino's 5th best even if it's his worst! :P

In any event, if I had been making the nominations, half this list would have been different.

True enough, and precisely why I posted this shat a minute or 2 after the nominations were announced when I shoulda been sleeping off an all night drunky! lol

There are very few nominations I don't think deserve it, but there are a lot of things/people that should have been nominated but were not.

A good little bit of humor can be derived from the fact that Julia Roberts is (I think) the first person ever nominated for both an Oscar AND a Razzie in the same year. I also think this is the first time the host of the Academy Awards (Steve MArtin this time) was also nominated for a Razzie.

“The Hurt Locker” Nominees to be determined
“Inglourious Basterds” Lawrence Bender, Producer

“A Serious Man” Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, Producers
“Up” Jonas Rivera, Producer
“Up in the Air” Daniel Dubiecki, Ivan Reitman and Jason Reitman, Producers

(Crux Note: A Serious Man would win this in a perfect world. It outshines everything else when comparing ALL aspects of the film: story, cinematography, music/score, acting, sound editing, screenplay, editing, and on and on. It may not be worthy of winning best in all of those, but it's no worse than second best in any IMO. Of course it's the Coens, so it has the best camera angles of the year.

Inglorious Basterds was okay. Tepid at parts. And highly overrated. The best parts of the entire movie were the French farmhouse and the French alehouse. That's it.

Throw in the restaurant scene with Herr Goebbels and I'd agree. Of course the full length tower sniper clip was a treat on the DVD special features.

Best movie I've seen all year is "In The Loop".

More quotable lines than "The Hangover", most of them delivered in a beautiful Scottish brogue.

That whole section was actually done by Eli Roth and not Tarantino.
