The only way that sucky pizza is gonn aget better is if a canadian bacon with onion tastes different from a supreme and tasstes different from peperoni with muchrooms. Otherwise, it's still the same bland, tasteless, variety-free piece of crap.

Maybe you Okies can't make a pie right. I've ordered in Dallas and here in Huskerland and it's amazing stuff. Puts Papa Johns to shame, and I love Papa Johns.

Dominoes and Papa Johns? You love them? Dude, I'll eat them if it's the only pizza in town and I'm jonesing for pizza, but I would never pick up a phone and think "I'ma call me in some Dominoes or PJs." Ever.

Now I do have the luxury of Jo's Pizza in Purcell, and NY Pizza & Pasta in Norman, but if I do a chain joint it'd have to be a Pizza Hut or Mazzios or something - and they ain't a whole lot better than Doms or PJs. Hell, Pizza Shuttle in Norman is better than those places.

From the 1st page of "United States of Arugula"

"If someone suggests a 'pizza pie' after the theater, don't think it is going to be a wedge of apple. It is going to be the surprise of your life." So began the April 21, 1939, column of the New York Herald Tribune food editor, Clementine Paddleford... "nice stunt to surprise the visiting relatives, who will be heading East soon for the World's Fair. They come to be surprised, and pizza, pronounced 'peet-za,' will do the job up brown."

Just over 70 years ago and nobody even knew what pizza was. That freaks me out.

... if I do a chain joint it'd have to be a Pizza Hut or Mazzios or something - and they ain't a whole lot better than Doms or PJs. Hell, Pizza Shuttle in Norman is better than those places.

A few things:

#1 - Of the national chain restaurants, Pizza Hut kicks the crap out of everyone else. No contest. Now, I've been in some ****ty Pizza Huts (don't bother going to one on the east coast), but their recipes are optimized for the Wichita, KS, climate. Papa John's, Domino's. Mazzio's, and Little Sneezer's are all crap.

#2 - I have to disagree with Dean on Pizza Shuttle. The actual pizza from ****s-a-puddle is greasy nastiness of biblical proportions. (Their sandwiches, however, are freaking awesome.)

#3 - the title of "best pizza evar" goes to Giordano's in Chicago.

Crucifax Autumn
2/2/2010, 03:49 AM
If you eat pizza with a knife and fork you deserve to be kicked in the ding ding.

In his defense, if you've ever had a pizza where you felt the need to break out a fork, I can guarantee you weren't bitching about the pizza joint skimping on toppings.

I won't carry on about pizza I had in NY or out here in Vegas (here the challenge is the crust since the water isn't "right" for making crust) and I haven't had pizza in Oklahoma since I was about 12 back in the dark ages, but I can comment on asstin from my years there, and keep in mind that even this info is out of date. Conan's made some excellent Chicago style pizza, and yes, occasionally I did feel the need to break out SicEm's fork.

Milto's on the Drag (if you can manage to hold your nose walking through all the rat bastard whorns) has pretty good pizza, though their greek food is probably their main strength. Where you can't possibly go wrong though, is their Stromboli. That is one of the single greatest pieces of food I have ever put in my mouth.

There was another tiny little pizza joint in asstin calle Dominic's years ago that had the best sauce, best thin crust, and some of the best toppings I had ever had, particularly the Italian sausage. Unfortunately when Dominic got busted for tax evasion it was also discovered that he was illegal, so he got sent back to Italy. As far as I know, Nick, the heroin addicted Italian cook that worked there never went back to pizza, choosing the glamouraous lifestyle of hard drugs instead of honest work. Rather fitting since the guy looked EXACTLY like Pacino.

I've since disovered a good cheat for increasing the chances of knowing the pizza will be good prior to ordering. A place that only has parmesean and red pepper flakes on the tables is fairly likely to suck Lady Gaga weiner. If they have oregeno, other italian herb blends, etc. it's way more likely that they are doing it right.

I'm with Dean and others when it comes to the chain establishments, Pizza hut is pretty good, consistent, and has good enough toppings to keep me from complaining for the next week. However, we ordered Pizza Hut Friday night and the toppings stopped literally 2 1/2 inches from the edge of the crust. It was like someone took a medium pizza and lined the entire thing with 2 cans of ****ing biscuits. And before any of you wiseasses tell me I should have got stuffed crust, stop right there with that lame-*** gimmick. It sounds like a fine idea at first, but in practice it blows. Every time I've had it the cheese has either melted and cooked out of the crust OR, even worse, the crust is half raw to avoid the previous problem.

This is the truest statement of the whole thread! Giordano's is absolutely amazing, it's always my first stop when I'm in Chi-town. Uno's in Chicago is a very, very close second. BUT, some people are Chicago style pizza fans and others are NY style fans so it's all in what you like. And you can order Giordano's online but it's hella expensive, something like $70-$80 for 2 pizzas shipped.

Crucifax Autumn

I like both NY and Chicago style myself. It all depends on my mood.

C&CDean

Enough already. Here's the deal. Sicem is completely full of ****, and hasn't got a clue about food. I'm a world traveller who weighs about 245-250. I pride myself on eating widely varying cuisine. I'll pretty much try anything, and will pretty much eat anything other than guts and fishy fish. I mean I'll eat them when I'm starving, but not when there's other food available.

Sicem is about a buck-twenty, maybe twenty five. He hates pretty much all foods. He doesn't even know how to get to Jo's pizza, let alone eat there. He requires a plate and fork to eat his pizza. He chooses to attend Baylor - for life.

So, having this background, who you gonna trust on a pizza call? That's what I thought.

Also, there's certain other foods you don't eat with a knife and fork. Like fried chicken. Pick that **** up and eat it right. Pork chops. Yes, use your knife and fork till you get up close to the bone, then pick that **** up and gnaw the hell out of it. Ribs. Never use a fork.

And finally, pizza. New York style pizza is pizza. Chicago style pizza is NOT pizza. It's a pizza casserole. I know this because good Chicago style pizza does have to be eaten with a fork, and we've already established that you don't eat pizza with a fork.

I like them both, but if I had to pick from one or the other, give me a thin crust slice about the size of a hubcap where I have to fold it over and let the grease run down my arm while eating it.

I'm having a hard time deciding on my favorite. Sully's in Sydney, Australia was great, and reminded me a lot of Tina's Pizzaria in Shanghai. I really liked the sauce at Governor's near Oxford, and there was a wonderful pizza-by-the-slice stand just a block or two from the Eiffel Tower. When in Rome, I went where the Roman's suggested: The Green Goat. But I gotta tell ya, the pizza in Antarctica is good no matter where you find yourself.

Ultimately, I've gotta say that Paradise Pizza in Atlantis is probably my favorite.

C&CDean

Yeah, but have you ever tried the moon pie?

Another place I just thought of for half-way decent pizza is Rick's Cafe in the Neverwin Casino. It's quasi-NY style, it just has a little too much cheese. You can get a slice for about $3.50, and they're big enough to completely cover a paper plate. Or you can be smart like me and go lose about $20K playing blackjack and then get a slice of pie comped.

We had Domino's here at work last week. It was pizza, alright. And, it was alright pizza. The barbecue chicken and buffalo chicken ones were pretty good. The bacon cheeseburger one was also good. The rest apparently tasted pretty much the same as always.

I have to say my favorite of the big chain pizzas is a Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza with pepperoni. I just like the way the rest of the crust (the thin part under the toppings) comes out on that pizza. It's thin, and holds the right amount of sauce/cheese/whatever.

GottaHavePride

NEVER take pizza advice from a husker. They eat Valentino's up there. And like it.

Never had Giordano's, but Gino's in Chicago is the bomb. It's nothing like whatever crap they call "Chicago-sytle" at a national chain.

Pizza Hut's thin crust pepperoni is the best national chain pizza. With some of them-there buffalo wings and a coke.

Haven't had the new Dominos, but it looks like an imitation of a Hideaway-style pizza. As in, really puffy and overloaded with toppings so you think it's fancy.

Speaking of Krusty's, has anyone else tried the new tex-mex called Cha-Cha's in Krusty's old location? I thought it was meh and their menu is dinky. Not in a hurry to go back.

One, lots of Huskers love Valentinos. I am not one of them. It's the worst **** I've ever had. I'd have rather had old Dominos.

Two, Giordano's in Chi-town, yes please. Amazing pizza.

Three, in the OP, I should have qualified that I was talking about the new Domino's being good in the context of delivered pizza. All delivered pizza is ****e compared to real pizza.

You people are harshing my mellow. Especially you Dean. You mean bastard. I'm going to go cry myself to drunk.

Here, I'm gonna give you $10 so you can call Dominoes and order you a Fiery Anus w/ extra fumunda. On me.

The best chain pizza is Mazzio's.
Isn't there a brick oven pizza place in Bricktown that's supposed to be really great?

If my tears could get me drunk then I'd totally go emo.

Yeah. Why be a 95%er?

Did you know Jo's offers thin crust pizza? Try it. How about just a thin crust pepperoni or say pepperoni and mushroom? Now I am making an awful big assumption that you'll even eat pepperoni or mushrooms here.

Since you loathe Jo's, pray tell me, what kind of pizza do you order there? And FWIW, we ordered a couple of pizzas from that joint in Waco you like for our tailgate party down there a few years back. They were good. In fact, they were very much like Jo's.

Hello! I had leftovers from Domino's for lunch. Three pieces, all for five minutes in the oven at 400 degrees. It was quite tasty.

I always eat thin-crust.

I usually either get a pepperoni or a mushroom/green-pepper combo.

Let's try and stay on topic, people. We're talking about the new pizza from Domino's, of which I happen to be a fan. Let's not bring the best band of the 80s, the worst Canadian act ever assembled or the best burger joint in the world into the discussion.

Thanks!

NEVER take pizza advice from a husker. They eat Valentino's up there. And like it.

Amen. That's why I left Omaha. Valentino's is like greeezy, tomato-flavored styrofoam. Blech.

i had some at a lunch meeting where "pizza" was provided. i thought it was pretty much the same....or trying to taste like Papa John's. no real strong sensation either way about it's "newness". i ordered a PJ's takeout one snow day a few weeks ago since the place is literally 4 blocks from my house and it was 4 degrees. pizza was awful, even by delivery standards....but i think particular franchise shop is run by meth-heads or something. i do know the domino's sandwiches are awful.

if i'm going to order a pie, i'll happily pay more and get a real pizza from either Cosmo's and Abo's in Boulder. they deliver, they don't charge you a sneaky "delivery fee" (Sup Domino's? and still expect you to tip the driver, and where actual human beings make the dough and toss the crust.

For all those of you who keep claiming that Giordano's in Chicago is the best pizza, try Papa Del's in Champaign, 2 hours south. Best. Pizza. Evar. And despite the fact that it is Chicago-style, I have never eaten it with a fork, and never will. Man up and eat your deep dish like a pizza. Forks are for wimps

Papa Johns has a special place in my heart for one and only one reason. I don't think I've ever ordered it in America. I never would. However, I lived in Mexico City for 5 months last year and there was one across from my apartment. I ate it once or twice per week because it was teh closest thing to American pizza I could get. :) That is sad really, because it ranks pretty low here.

My favorite is NY style. In Oklahoma I really like Marios. My favorite chicago style is Lou Malnotti's in chicago. The original one is good. They have several now, so I don't know if they have kept the quality.

Mario's Pepperoni, Sausage, and Jalapeno with a little garlic sprinkled on top is my favorite. Its the best NY Style pizze I've had in Tulsa, although I like Pie Hole too. I've heard B52s is pretty respectable too, but I haven't had it.

Bee-fitty-two's in BA is a'ight. Kinda reminds me of Hideaway's, maybe less greasy.

Momma stopped last night at Jo's in Purcell and brought home a large pepperoni/mushroom, a large supreme, and a large taco pizza.

I don't eat the taco crap (although it is tasty in a Taco Hell sorta way), but I had a couple pieces each from the other two. I tried to put myself in Sicem's mindset so I could maybe see his point of view about Jo's pizza. I shaved my body, tucked my genitals up inside myself, painted myself from head to toe with whiteout, put myself into a Miata through mental imagery, and tasted the pizza. It was still damn good. I guess I needed to stick an icepick up under my eyelid or something and hopefully stick the taste sensing part of the brain.

It really was pretty good pizza. Not NY, but damn good.

Yeah, it's pretty good. It's not some religious experience or anything, but it's good pie. My only beef about it is the price. It ain't cheap. I think momma said that the 3 pies cost "about 35-40 bucks."

i get that. i have a place here like that. it's a good pie, but it's priced about 5$ more out of what i'd consider market value for no real reason i can tell (vs. the two places i mention above, Abo's and Cosmo's). wheat prices went through the roof about 16 months ago and a place like a pizza joint is going to have to pass that cost on. a six pack of decent beer was 6.99 on sale a couple years ago. that same sixer is 7.99 or maybe 8.99 these days at the store i go to. even on sale.

i have an italian buddy who owns his own pasta/grill joint and he makes fresh pasta and handmade ravioli, gnocchi and tortellini and whatnot....that's his "thing". and it hit him hard. he's got a lot of "regulars" and he had to raise prices. so, maybe there's some of that more than flat avarice at Jo's.

Maybe they should grow and grind their own wheat? I hear there is a place near here that grows that **** on a regular basis. :D
