View Full Version : Jeffcoat announcing Friday morning

Who said the upcoming weekend was going to be "a dead week" in terms of football excitement?

Standout defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat of Plano West (Texas) High School is planning to single-handedly boost some life back into Sunday night television ratings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He'll make a live announcement Sunday on his college commitment on KDFW-TV, the Fox affiliate.

Jeffcoat is the No. 2 recruit nationally on the ESPNU 150 list. He also is the highest-ranked player on the list who has not announced his commitment.

What makes this so intriguing are the cast of finalists still in the hunt for Jeffcoat, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound speed-rushing defensive end.

Texas and Oklahoma are believed to be the two favorites. Mack Brown spent most of a day at Jeffcoat's school before visiting with Jeffcoat's family that night last week. But he didn't come away with a commitment as Jeffcoat visited Oklahoma over the weekend on his final official visit. Jeffcoat was joined in a group that included top Texas A&M linebacker recruit Corey Nelson of Dallas Skyline.

Some have speculated that the Sooners may have an inside track to attracting Jeffcoat because his twin sister Jacqueline committed to Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale to play basketball for the Lady Sooners in the fall.

Others have said that Jackson might end up at Houston, where his father, former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Jim Jeffcoat, is a member of Kevin Sumlin's coaching staff.

The other finalist is Arizona State, where his father played college football. Jackson Jeffcoat has already dropped USC and Florida from his list of six schools which remained at the start of December.

It's one of those classic recruiting battles between Texas and Oklahoma. The fact that he could join his dad at Houston or go back to Arizona State only makes it more intriguing.

Which way will he go?

We'll find out next Sunday night.

I'm not real keen on the evolution of commitment announcements into a spectacle -- but, obviously, I can't help but think that a great DE would love playing in our defense... And that we would love to have him.

We've always had good line play here under Stoops, and that has got to help a kid get good stats and quality playing time (rather than spending his career double teamed and frustrated). So, here's hoping he heads our way.

The nation's No. 2 prospect Jackson Jeffcoat (Plano, Texas/West) is down to three schools after dropping Arizona State from consideration. The 6-foot-4, 233-pound five-star defensive end will decide between Texas, Oklahoma and Houston in the coming days, but an announcement time has not been set as of Tuesday night.

Jeffcoat made his final official visit last weekend to Oklahoma, which was followed by an in-home visit by Sooners coaches Bob Stoops, Jackie Shipp, Brent Venables and Josh Heuple on Monday night. Texas assistants Oscar Giles and Bobby Kennedy were in attendance at Tuesday's Plano West basketball game.

The Longhorns have been the favorite in recent weeks, but the Sooners have helped themselves with a strong official visit. Jeffcoat's twin sister, Jacqueline, signed a basketball scholarship with Oklahoma in the early signing period.

Each individual is different, stars tell us two things

1) Their ability to develop if they take it seriously
2) How good of a football school they go to, if you go to Altus or Watonga HS and run for 3000 yds you are going to be a 2 or 3 star, if you do that at Jenks or Union you will be a 5 star.

Recruiting services probably don't factor much into work ethic and mental acuity. It's all physical measurables. Hence the Bomars and the Rawls's.

Bomar was an elite physical talent but had major character issues and didn't seem to be coachable since he often disregarded what Heupel would tell him to do.

WWJD (What Will Jeffcoat Do?) We’ll know Friday
BY Kevin Hageland Staff Writer
Published: Thursday, January 28, 2010 1:03 PM CST
And then there were three.

Plano West senior defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat has cut his choices down to Texas, Oklahoma and Houston, with Arizona State being the latest team eliminated from contention.

I am going to provide my latest bit of information in this blog, but if speculation isn’t your game, then check back here Friday as Jeffcoat’s commitment announcement will be up by then … sorry Fox 4 producer Kevin Morrell, but I told you so.

Anyway, ever since USC switched head coaches, I have said Jeffcoat will being going to Texas.

That conviction became a bit stronger Tuesday.

I was at West to cover the Wolves boys basketball game against Allen (a very competitive contest by the way) and noticed Jeffcoat’s mother Tammy in the stands flanked by a pair of Texas representatives. One of said representatives stayed with Mrs. Jeffcoat throughout the game while the other split his time between Mrs. Jeffcoat and West head football coach Mike Hughes.

Interesting.

I talked to the West and Allen coaches after the game and saw the pair dressed in burnt orange lingering in the lobby, so I decided to wait around as well. During this time I spoke with one individual from the Wolves coaching staff (apparently a fan of the blog) who said he could tell the decision was really starting to wear on Jeffcoat.

Yeah, take a number.

Jeffcoat came to the lobby and briefly talked with the two Texas reps before they exited the public forum of the lobby … uh oh, guess I was spotted.

I didn’t know where they went, so I headed back to my car, which was parked behind the gym. As I made my way to the car, Jeffcoat and the two Texas reps were standing behind the gym and talking … right by where my car was parked.

I could have simply started the car and headed back to the office … we were on deadline after all … but instead I decided to sit there and see if anything of note happened.

No decisions were made that night, but it’s easy to see how the decision could be weighing on Jeffcoat because everybody wants to know. Several girls, some of them cheerleaders, were parked in the same lot as me and they all yelled to Jeffcoat when they saw him.

Some comments were as innocent as, “Hey Jackson, where are you going to school? Let me know and I’ll be your agent,” while others were more risqué, such as the girl who screamed out, “Jackson, will you sign my belly?”

Jeffcoat talked with the Texas reps for a good 15 minutes before shaking one of their hands and the other one gave him a high five.

What does this mean?

Maybe nothing, especially considering Jeffcoat was reportedly at the Oklahoma-Iowa State basketball game Wednesday night. And also consider this, Oklahoma’s campus is closed tomorrow. Yes, I know they are saying it’s because of the weather … but could it actually be because Jeffcoat will announce his decision tomorrow?

And does all this mean Houston is at a disadvantage? No, because the guy recruiting Jeffcoat for the Cougars is his dad Jim!

So, there you go.

I still think Texas is where Jeffcoat will go, but I know in our Generation Me culture we demand to know everything as it happens and I figured I would give you everything I knew about the situation with less than 24 hours to go before Jeffcoat’s decision.

If that’s not enough … come back in one day and the story will be up.

And then come back every day after that … cause you know, I usually write about things in the blog that aren’t related to Jeffcoat at all. Hard to believe, but it’s true.

Announicing it at a texass high school probably means he is picking texass. Hopefully if not OU it will be Houston. Sumlin and daddy may have swayed him.

... And also consider this, Oklahoma’s campus is closed tomorrow. Yes, I know they are saying it’s because of the weather … but could it actually be because Jeffcoat will announce his decision tomorrow?

Now that that's funny !

Hicks to Ohio State is dead, he chose Texas
From insider sources on Texas Rivals paid board

After all of the talk of a three-way race between Texas, Ohio State and Florida for the last few months, all signs in the final hours are pointing towards the Longhorns. In fact, a source close to the family told us on Thursday that several key members of Hicks’ immediate family have been pulling for the Longhorns all along and that they are aware of his decision and very pleased.

Another connected Ohio source tells us that a member of the coaching staff indicated to him today that the Longhorns had won out.

Perhaps the biggest sign that we’ve received that would point towards a Longhorn victory is the fact that a national source told us earlier in the week that he had confirmed through his sources at both Ohio State and Florida that they had been shut out of all in-homes or possible communication with Hicks all week. Meanwhile, another non-UT source confirmed to us that he had confirmed that Will Muschamp will visit with Hicks at some point on Saturday. If our source is correct, that would mean that Muschamp has been approved for an in-person visit after the announcement is made and there don’t appear to be any other visits from his finalists lined up post-announcement.

Also several sources are beginning to report he decided on Texas over Ohio State/Florida

Look on the brightside, he didn't go to Florida.

Bomar may have turned out alright if he hadn't gotten into trouble.

We would have loved Bomar... because of his stupidity we were able to get Mr. Bradford on the field, so it ended up even better for Sooner fans. But Bomar would have settled down his junior year and potentially received the Heisman his senior year behind that offensive line.

As long as Texas keeps beating us and going to NC games they will kill us in recruiting. It's that simple. They already have built in advantages over everyone. We can't beat Texas in recruiting unless start winning big bowl games and beating them.

I saw Adam Shead OUr OL commit do a really good job vs Jeffcoat during the playoffs this year. Jeffcoat played DT at times this year and when he lined up over Shead he didnt win one battle. No doubt Jeffcoat is a great player but our "3 star" OL commit got the best of him.

I was going against those idiots that were rooting for Texas because of Big 12 pride. It is never good to root for Texas because they don't need to win to get great talent. Hell they can lose every year and still get top 5 classes.

Could it be that we have a stacked DE rotation going into next year? Beal and Alexander are badasses. OUr superstar 5 star recruit from 2008, RJ Washington, and badass David King looked good last year. I wouldn't come to OU if I were Jeffcoat. He won't see PT until at least 2011. Besides, didn't we get Geneo Grissom, to complete the Kansas trio?

F texass and F jeffcoat. LOL he is going to be a 2 sport star...lol

You know, one knock on him was that he wants to play both sports, and playing BBALL would hinder his progression as an elite DE. If he wants to be the next All American DE, he needs to add weight and strength, or he will get pushed back by the better tackles out there. Heck, Adam Shead did exactly that in their head-to-head. This may have been another factor as for him choosing *. Coach Stoops might have told him that he would have to choose, and he didn't want to do that. Whereas Ol' Yellerteef and his pet gorilla (Muschamp) probably didn't care, and just wanted him in the fold.

SoonerAtKU
1/29/2010, 05:19 PM
That actually is what I suspect as well. It seems like Mack might have allowed Jeffcoat his illusions of playing both sports. As we all know, the football team gets him first next year, and if they can, they're going to work him so hard he'll be too tired to even spell basketball, much less practice. They're going to training table him up about 10-20 lbs, and focus on quick footwork instead of longer motions. Once they're done with him, he'll be as useless to the UT basketball program as I am.

He's a 6-3 power forward. He'll never see a second of PT.

IronHorseSooner
1/29/2010, 05:30 PM
I wonder if that is also why Henderson backed out of his visit. I don't believe that you can be an elite lineman and be an elite BBALL player. Just look at Tiny and Private Pyle at *. They are around the same size as Henderson, and they SERIOUSLY need to lose more weight to be effective. Now, OTOH, McCay is also a dual sport guy, but I wonder if he has decided to go full-bore for football. I know that he is also listed as a recruit for Coach Capel, but if he was to remain a WR, he could stay at about is same size, 6'3" and 200. That's about WWIII's size, and McCay is a guard by trade.

Some of these guys have delusions of grandeur that would boggle OUr minds. I seriously believe he wants to do both. Heck, there was another guy about his size, Tony Gonzalez, who seriously considered trying out for the NBA a few years ago. In fact, some in KC at the time thought that they were going to lose him to a market that also had a team in need of a forward. The fact is that no one has sat down with these guys and told them the truth about their abilities. I bet Stoops and Venables did, and Jeffcoat didn't like it.

Yes, and if he is more interested about immediate playing time or partying up at *, then we don't need him.

Just dig the guys that we sign and lets go to battle. Maybe Stoops is about to get the bigtime fire going where we see players buying in to the team concept and playing hungry every game, like the early 2000s.
