So I was thinking about all the years where all we needed was a bowl win for a national title. Help me fill in the gaps in my memory. I'm not talking about one loss seasons or regular season losses that may have cost us (i.e., '86 to Miami). I'm thinking we got it down to one game for all the marbles- how have we done?

Just off the top of my head...

'08- lost to Florida
'04- lost to USC
'03- lost to LSU
'00- Beat Florida St.
'87- lost to Miami
'85- beat Penn St. (needed Sugar help)
'84- lost to Washington (would've been an interesting vote with BYU)

Somebody fill in ancient history for me...

'78 or '79, we would have likely won another MNC if we had beaten Lou Holtz's Arkansas team.

Yep- '78- lost to Arkansas. That's a painful one.

Before the game, they conducted a poll and found that if OU won big, they would have won the national title. A close win would not have done the trick.

Yes, because beating a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl is so much more impressive.

Before 1965 Championships were determined before Bowls, so OU would have won in 58 if they beat Texas. Texas won that game on a 2 point conversion which was a new rule that Darrell Royal the coach of Texas was against.

1957 beat ND and we would have won a national title.

OU was 8 points away from winning 62 straight games and 4 straight national titles. That would never have been touched.

I've got 4 of those 7-up pop bottles if you'd like them.

It was a general consensus, done-deal conclusion at kickoff that OU would be National Champs with that win. We were heavy favorites, can't remember but seems like a couple of touchdowns. That was OU's worst bowl stink-up ever before the USC debacle. Here's the link if you can bear to watch again...

As it is, it will likely never be touched.

Or 1949 and 1954 when we went undefeated. I think we were also unbeaten in 1911 and 1920.
