Needed a bowl win for a National Title- woulda, coulda, shoulda

So I was thinking about all the years where all we needed was a bowl win for a national title. Help me fill in the gaps in my memory. I'm not talking about one loss seasons or regular season losses that may have cost us (i.e., '86 to Miami). I'm thinking we got it down to one game for all the marbles- how have we done?

Just off the top of my head...

'08- lost to Florida
'04- lost to USC
'03- lost to LSU
'00- Beat Florida St.
'87- lost to Miami
'85- beat Penn St. (needed Sugar help)
'84- lost to Washington (would've been an interesting vote with BYU)

Before 1965 Championships were determined before Bowls, so OU would have won in 58 if they beat Texas. Texas won that game on a 2 point conversion which was a new rule that Darrell Royal the coach of Texas was against.

1957 beat ND and we would have won a national title.

OU was 8 points away from winning 62 straight games and 4 straight national titles. That would never have been touched.

worked with a guy for a few years that played and started on that arKansas team and have no reason to doubt anything he said about OU's team that day, ad lets just say he didnt paint a pretty picture of the OU team....
