Louisiana Tech head football (http://www.sportingnews.com/college-football/article/2010-01-15/derek-dooley-reportedly-accepts-tennessee-coaching-job#) coach and athletic director Derek Dooley is close to accepting the head coaching job at Tennessee, multiple news sources are reporting.
Dooley, who just completed his third season with the Bulldogs, met with Tennessee officials on Wednesday and Thursday. Dooley was reportedly recommended to the Volunteers by Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. Muschamp, who declined the Tennessee job, coached with Dooley at LSU and in the NFL (http://www.sportingnews.com/college-football/article/2010-01-15/derek-dooley-reportedly-accepts-tennessee-coaching-job#) with the Miami Dolphins.
Dooley was 17-20 at Tech, but went 8-5 and won the Independence Bowlhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.sportingnews.com/college-football/article/2010-01-15/derek-dooley-reportedly-accepts-tennessee-coaching-job#) this season. He's the son of former Georgia coach Vince Dooley.
The hire would bring an end to a tumultous coaching search in which Tennessee was rejected by Muschamp, TCU's Gary Patterson, Utah's Kyle Whittingham, Air Force's Troy Calhounhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif (http://www.sportingnews.com/college-football/article/2010-01-15/derek-dooley-reportedly-accepts-tennessee-coaching-job#), former NFL coach John Gruden, and most recently, Duke's David Cutcliffe after the position was opened by the departure of Lane Kiffin to USC on Tuesday.

I was beginning to feel sorry for the Vols.

I'll admit - I had to google Dooley. When you have to google somebody mentioned in coaching searches, it's not a good sign.

But really, Tennessee is running out of options before they end up with their own version of Bill "Throat Slash" Callydewshebag. Of course, Nebraska put themselves in that situation, unlike Rocky Top :D

Being an alum from Tech this sucks. He was finally making us matter again at the mid major level. He pumped a lot of money in Tech athletics. I hate to see where we'll be when he leaves. But it does make sense for the Vols. He has SEC blood and is a Saban disiciple. All because of Lane Kiffin.

I agree that they had to do something and every program in Louisiana is eff'd when it comes to recruiting and winning so long as LSU is in the S-E-C! S-E-C! so it's a good move for the coach. 100k stadium, entire state to recruit from without another major Div. 1 program (Memphis and Vandy suck!), school song with a lot cymbal crashing, etc.

As for Tennessee itself, time to get out the bags over the heads again.

Lane Kiffin was their Bill Callahan.
Not even close. Kiffin is a "jewel" compared to Clownenbergerhan. Tennessee was pretty competetive this year for the most part. I just wonder why no one wants that job?? They have everything you need there to be succesful. Hell, you can win against Bama and Florida. They aren't the end all!!

They have pics now of Dooley's wife up on VolNation. Not bad, but I think the Vols got screwed on this one. Perhaps that is the real reason for the riots.

Huge hire for Tennessee. He may not have had a great record at La. Tech, but he had the program on the right track.

Another big gamble and self-preservation going on here by Mike Hamilton, if you ask me--that has either the potential for a big time payout in several years or a huge crash and burn ending. Even though Derek is a Nick Saban disciple, that does not camouflage his losing record. Mike was in a tough spot--he was working to a self-imposed deadline on the hire and he really had no choice with Cut refusing to budge on his demands that he bring his own staff--not to mention that if David had taken the job, Hamilton probably would have been fired and Phil Fulmer would have been brought in as his replacement. Also, Derek will not be a puppet of the trustees and/or Philip Fulmer.

He was probably not the best available that would take the job, but I really think Derek has a lot of potential and deserves a shot at a big time program.

I know you hate Callahan and rightfully so, but from what I've seen not a whole lot separates the two besides age. Tennessee was "competitive" because they had an incredible staff. Kiffin is an idiot just like Callahan.

A top 15 program (supposedly) gets turned down by 5 coaches in less than a week, then has to hire a guy who was 17-20 at La Tech. Smells of desperation

I am betting it will be a good hire.

Don't let his country twang/southern drawl accent deceive you.

If DD was a stock, I'd be backing up the truck and packing it to the roof with it. I think he's got a lot of upside and he's smart enough to surround himself with the right people. He emulates Nick Saban in so many ways it's not even funny--now there's a man with a business model worthy of imitation.

To be fair in regards to Dooley, his record at La Tech isn't any indication of how good a coach he may or may not be. La Tech football is essentially a Division 3 program surviving in D-1A by being a bottom feeder in a bottom feeder conference (WAC).
