1. Urban Meyer's change of heart due to recruits ready to bail
2. USC hire of Kiffin to keep recruits from bailing

Frozen Sooner

Surely not. Everything I hear out here is how Mike Leach's offense can't work in the SEC, even though it did when he was the OC at Kentucky.

I don't think we will ever see another TV ban now that so many games are televised, it's really lost all meaning. I suppose you could try and make them forfeit TV money though.

Au contraire, a TV ban means that much more. In the past, you were maybe giving up three chances to sell yourself to a recruit on TV. Now? You're giving up 10-11 chances to get into their living room.

I don't think the NCAA controls the TV money anymore. That's kind of what the Oklahoma v. NCAA decision was about.

But so are the conference teams that play them, and you don't think they want the shot to pound a fallen SC on TV. Now that everybody gets a lot of TV games, I don't see them wanting to give it up to punish SC.

Normally, I'd say "yes." But in this case, Kiffin was looking like such a train wreck -- looks like USC just saved them from the train wreck and having to make a panic hire following.

If Tenn exploits this opportunity to make a smart hire, they could come out on the rosy end of the stick.

USC, not so rosy.

Let's just say this happens. (And I would LOVE to see it.) Does Mike get to continue his lawsuit against Tech?

How stupid would the Tech admin look then? Leach pulling down a million or more per season in the SEC, while they are paying some retread fired from the SEC, and shelling out a couple of mill to Leach himself.

The parallels to Dennis Franchione are obvious and no doubt, Bama fans are laffing their butts off over this one. That he is taking over at SC under less than optimal circumstances with the odds of failure high (failure being not maintaining Petey's level of success, 9-4 season notwithstanding, which won't be easy, especially with sanctions looming) would seem to be more difficult than bringing UT back to the level they expect.

Then there is the question, what exactly has Lane Kiffin done to merit so much interest? That part reminds me of Dave Wannstedt, who had one line on his coaching resume that read Defensive Coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, then went on to flop with the Dolphins and underachieve at Pitt. So far, Kiffin can say he is the son of a player/coach, went 5-15 with the Raiders and 7-6 at UT.

Lane is like the guy you would not buy a used car from or allow to date your daughter.

Read what Tom Dienahrt had to say about Lane:

Mike Garrett was a heck of running back in his playing days – he won the 1965 Heisman Trophy for the Trojans. He never moved quicker than he did since Carroll left for the Seattle Seahawks. This was the speed dating of all coaching searches, Garrett apparently running down his wish list like he was on a last-minute mission to find a prom date.

He finished with Kiffin, the fair-haired, father’s son who may turn out to be a good hire or may be a complete disaster.

The thing with Kiffin is there is truly no way to know – he hasn’t lasted anywhere long enough to show he’s more than a confident kid with a famous football name (Monte was considered a defensive genius during his long career as an NFL assistant). There’s a hint of potential to him, but also a tendency for self-inflicted mistakes. Garrett is the third person to hire Kiffin. The first two currently wish they never heard of him.

Screwing over UT certainly doesn’t say much about Kiffin. Yes, it’s the USC job, coveted beyond belief. And yes, this is America and everyone has a right to better their situation.

There’s also a thing called loyalty. Even by the pathetically low standards of college athletics, this one was rough. Naturally Kiffin soothed everything over by holding an approximate one-minute news conference in Knoxville.

After having so many targets basically sprint away from the position, they went with someone they knew would accept, and apparently plan to surround him with so much coaching talent--not only is Dad coming to USC, but word is Norm Chow as well--that even Kiffin can't screw it up.

I'll admit, part of me is laughing at UT, but seriously, nobody deserves this. Well, maybe Notre Dame. Leaving a team after one year is simply beyond classless--so it's completely in character for Kiffin.

I kind of feel sorry for Tennessee, but really, the SEC coaches have seemed, more recently at least, to be ready to leave their program in a heartbeat, regardless of past successes or failures.

The fact that Tennessee had only two coaches in the past 30 years before Kiffie Kins? Doesn't make a difference.

Glad it was you and not us, Rocky Top. Sorry.

Kiffin might succeed at USC. He's slick and loose enough to get the slick and loose players who have talent and are unencumbered by scruples. He's a perfect fit for sleazy SC.
Then again, he's never proved he's anything as an actual coach, and when his daddy finally retires, he'll be ska-rooood. My bet is that Tennessee comes out better in the long run than USC.

Pitt:5-6,6-6,5-7,9-4,!0-3= 35-26
OU : 84,11-3,11-3,12-2,8-5 = 50-17 3 conference titles

.Not saying this proves Wanndstat is a bad coach but the fact Pitt went 10-3 this year and OU went 8-5 doesn't prove ANYTHING other than OU was crppled by injuries.

To get back to the subiect at Hand ,I am tickled sh!tless to see an unproven HC take the Condomn reins as propation looms.I do feel soory for vol fans.I imagine they feel like we would have if Bob had left for UF to replace Spurrier.

I'm getting a pretty clear picture of USC as the next unabashed "gangsta" program like Miami was back in the day. With Kiffin and Orgeron, it's a natural development. And if Des Howard thinks Kiffin is a great pick, for the reasons he said (see ESPN), then you know that's how it's gonna be.

Didn't mean to start a row about Wannstedt, just comparing him to Lanny because after his stint with Dallas he seemed to get progressively better jobs, all the while failing in the process.

HC of Chicago Bears - flop

HC of Miami Dolphins - worse flop

HC of Pitt - flop, flop, flop

Okay, so he has put together a couple of good seasons there. Lucky for him the Pitt administration and fans gave him four years to do something (unlike those ungrateful bastids at Notre Dame!).

But I still think Dave is a little too excitable on the sideline!

Well, it was bound to happen. Hitler found out about Lane's departure. Pretty stale, but it does have some good dialog at the end.

That is pretty funny. Then, for extra lulz, go watch the actual presser video. They guy that tries to bully the Tennessee official tries to get Lane to stay for questions, then the annoying chick shouts "What does this mean for recruiting, Lane?"

After arguing that long and knowing that Lane will not say anything, they should have asked Lane a question that he would be willing to answer first before having annoying guy and annoying girl try. Of course Lane is not going to answer about Tennessee recruiting, and of course he isn't going to do any favors for the guy who was bad mouthing him earlier and not agreeing to his terms of the post-leavin' interview.

Ah, whatever. Glad it was them and not us :D
