My birthday is in June and I am planning a trip to Amarillo to eat the 72oz Steak. Is there anything I need to know about Amarillo? Is there more than one place to go eat it? Where is the best place to go?

Thanks

While you are there you should go to Lake Meredith, it is a really pretty lake.

'Bix Texan' is the home of the free 72 oz. steak.

They have a website; hell they even have a live webcam of the table at which you'd sit to attempt eating that huge mess.

That place was recently featured on Man Vs. Food on the Travel Channel. Seems like the host just barely made it. On the web is a list of other places the host visited while in town:

I want to try the "Burger from Hell" too. (http://www.travelchannel.com/TV_Shows/Man_v_Food/ci.Amarillo.show?vgnextfmt=show)

Just a warning on the 72oz steak, they get you on the fixins. And from what I've heard, the cocktail sauce for the shrimp is ridiculously spicy. I'm from right outside Amarillo and I can tell you there's not too many great places to eat there. If you like sushi or japanese hibatchi, you must go to Kabuki Romanza. Hands down best food and atmosphere you can find in the area. And don't look for The Big Texan to WOW you with the food, it's a tourist trap and the food is extremely generic.

Palo Duro Canyons are also not far from there if you are into that sort of thing.

The Big Texan is definitely a tourist trap. I do know that they offer a free limo service to and from the place if you are close enough by. You call them and they arrive in an old limo with a set of longhorns on the hood. Kind of fun if you are there with a larger group.

Bout 20 years ago, Amarillo used to have a sports bar called Hummers. No idea if they still exist (doubt it), but they served the "famous" or not so famous "Hummer burger."

I don't remember how much it weighed, but it was basically a large pizza pan. They added hamburger buns enough to cover the pizza pan, then hamburger patties one per bun. They put some mustard, pickles and onions on top, then a top patty. They gave you an XXL order of fries and probably something else, I don't remember.

Same deal: You eat it in an hour, you get it free with t-shirt saying "I ate the Hummer burger."

I still have my "I ALMOST ate the Hummer burger" tshirt somewhere.

EDIT: To add that to this day I can remember how bad that burger tasted. Jeeze, we went to Hummers to watch BillyBall at the Big 8 Tourney. Good times those were.

SITES TO SEE IN AMARILLO: Palo Duro Canyon, Cadillac Ranch. Other than that, Big Texas Steakhouse is about it.

Have heard Lake Meredith is nice, but never went there.

^This.

On our way to Albuquerque we stopped in there. It was late but I wanted to show the kids the place and remind them to never ever eat there or anywhere in +exas unless they really had to do it. We then went over sat at the table. There were all sorts of folks standing around with little straw cowboy hats on along with their little Deputy Sheriff badges. They couldn't even get four glasses of water to the table so we got up and walked out. I felt like doing it anyway from the time I walked in there.

Also....the 72 oz Steak(?) and all of the fixings is on a stand right outside where you tell them you'd like to eat at their slop house. The steak is wrapped in handi-wrap to make it even more appetizing and then it's surrounded by all the fixings. Each plate also has jalapeno peppers bordering the slop on the plate. I believe there are 4 plates surrounding the plate with the roast on it. As bad as the food was when I ate there in 2001....I can't imagine how delicious the center portion of that turd on a plate must be.

I wouldn't do it if I were you unless it was well documented on video and someone new which hospital to take you to just in case. Now....if you wanted to do it and you get it free....I'm not sure if it's against the rules to go back in and puke it up on the center of the dining room floor. It probably wouldn't go to waste. Someone would probably eat whatever you left. ;)

My wife and I ate there on our way to Santa Fe for vacation. The place was packed with people, but the food was pretty good. We just ate 18 oz. ribeyes. There is also a Big Texan motel, a huge gift shop, and you can even buy homemade fudge. Very touristy!

I've eaten there a number of times, It's not the best steak ever, but then again it's not bad. It is more than anything a tourist attraction, but nothing particularly wrong with that.

No way could I eat the entire 72oz steak dealio.

At Cattle Rustlers (I think is the name) in Ardmore, OK they have an 80 ounce steak. Could save you a trip to Amarillo if you live in the area. Never had it, so don't know much about it. All I remember is that they throw you hot rolls.

Burger from hell, isn't really that. Pretty much a vinegar soaked patty from all the tobasco sauce. I'd never eat it again, and not because it was hot, just wasn't very good. :(

That amarillo steak looked like more of a small roast than a steak. That's what kind of does me in. If they threw down 72 oz of filets....I might have gone for it back in the day....

The chicken fried steak is probably the best thing on their menu imo.

I lived in Amarillo for 3 years and drove by the Big Texan every day on my way to work. Locals told me it was a tourist trap and the food was run-of-the-mill. I never went in to eat there. The burger joint featured in Man v Food on the Travel Channel was very good. As I remember it wasn't too far from the house I rented. Other than that the restaurants were lacking in Amarillo. I did enjoy my time living there though. City was not too small and not too big. I liked it much better than Lubbock.

My brother did health inspection for that area for a while... Might consider extra bug parts while you are eating that roast... they can add a little to the the calorie content.
