Good grief! Lawyers.

Froze, dude, you really want to join the dark side?

Apparently.

I fear however, he picked a horrible time to do so. The professional journals are full of "how new grads can survive the recession", "what to do when there's no job for you," etc.

I'm hoping he becomes an academic because although he is a godless liberal, he's not nearly so as most law skool professors. ;)

The plan is that by the time I graduate, the job market will be in better shape. There's signs of recovery in the market-most of the big firms are releasing their salary freezes and some are even paying "make whole" bonuses.

If not, well, I'm going to have little enough student debt that I can do something public-interest until the job market gets better if that's what needs to happen. I have a prof who's really pushing me towards a DoJ job. I'm actually sort of leaning towards white-collar prosecution. Turns out Crim was my favorite course.

Homey, if the name Joe Colquitt is familiar to you at all from the time you spent in Alabama, he was my Crim professor.

Froz, you won't find a more rewarding job on earth. When you can do something to the bad guy who did evil to the victim, you're making the world a better place.

Just not in Tulsa. 'Cuz the DA here, well, ugghh.

I'd like to see Froz head back up to Alaska and help those indigenous people. I still think it was a rat-f#cking of the first-order the gubmint decided the indigenous people of Alaska aren't "indians," therefore they are not entitled to the same rights and benefits (or casinos) that indigenous people in the lower 48 are afforded.

Yes and no. Under ANILCA they get some pretty substantial privileges that Native Americans don't get.

Okay, so they get to hunt whales. BFD. No gaming means no reasonable opportunity for self-determination or to finance their own self-administered social programs.

Huh. Tell that to CIRI or ASRC.

Which isn't to say that ANILCA was perfect or anything and that the Native Alaskan tribes didn't get some shabby treatment. It's just a different setup. Several of the Native Corporations do really really well and kick out significant annual dividends-CIRI in particular kicked out a 40k tax-free dividend a few years ago (though it was the first one they ever did.) The native corporations are significantly invested in lots and lots of industry around Alaska and lots of commercial real estate. ASRC, in particular, is a major player in North Slope oilfield services.

The Tribal Health Consortium seems to be pretty well-funded by the corporations as well. The Native Health Center in Anchorage is a palace-many orders of magnitude nicer than either Providence or Alaska Regional.

What, because he only takes cases that are slam dunks?
