View Full Version : Snack Foods I Once Loved That No Longer Exist

Quite a few of my old-favorites are no longer made or the recipe has been totally changed and bares scant resemblance to the original. This is just one more thing to be bitter about. Below is a list of some of my favorite discontinued or changed snacks.

1. Doo-Dads: I would eat boxes and boxes of this stuff as a kid. It was a snack mix with chex like squares, pretzels, peanuts, and these little cheese log things. They had a spicier seasoning than normal Chex-Mix and man were they delicious. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3606/3406369018_9e0b537a85.jpg?v=0

2. Nabisco Toastette pastries: These were soooo much better than Kellogg's pop-tarts. They had a sweeter/flakier crust and were just totally superior to that crap Kellogg produces.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2516/3836502844_c6c024abf3.jpg

3. Wheatables (original recipe): Wheatables are still around, but they don't look or taste anything like they did when they were first introduced. I loved the original formula which was thinner and more savory than the snack food that currently bears the name.

4. Nabisco's Devil's Food Cookies: Years ago these cookies came in this long red package and were rectangular in shape. Now they're marketed as some sort of health food under the Snackwell brand and they're round to boot. They don't really taste any different, but I always feel gay buying them. They're marketed to 20'something chicks with self-esteem issues.

4. Welch's grape juice in a small aluminum can: You used to be able to get Welch's Grape Juice in these tiny V-8 looking aluminum cans. They had these sticker tabs that you peeled off to drink (they didn't have pull tabs). I hate grape juice, but I loved those things. For some reason the metal can significantly alters the taste of the grape juice and just made it better. Again, I was wild for these things as a kid.

5. Jell-O Pudding Pops: Good lord these were delicious and they had Bill Cosby on the box. Why on Earth were these discontinued? They were delicious!
http://www.hammradio.com/images/content/JelloPuddingPops.jpg

6. Pizza Flavored Doritos: These were FANTASTIC. But they were probably one of those strange novelty flavors that never caught on...like Crystal Clear Pepsi (which was disgusting).

7. Coke II: Coke II is the rebranded soda that Coke introduced after they changed the original Coke's formula and there was a HUGE public backlash against it. They brought back the original Coke formula branding it "Coca-Cola Classic" and the "new" Coke formula was rebranded Coke II. I was one of the people that LOVED Coke II. It didn't last very long, but I think I was responsible for half its sells. I remember toward the end there was only one place I could find it...the pool at East Central High School in Tulsa. Whenever I'd have a swim meet at East Central, I'd run to the vending machine between heats and empty its supply of delicious Coke II.
http://www.x-entertainment.com/articles/sodas/2.jpg

That's about all I can think of. After compiling this list, I realized a lot of these great snacks were made by Nabisco and Nabisco is responsible for killing them. Therefore, Nabisco can kiss my ***!

1. Jello Pudding Pops are available in a great many grocery stores. You'll find them with rest of the products made by "Popsicle". You know, the people that brought you Fudgesicles, Oragesicles, RocketPops, etc...

2. Are you sure you mean Pizza flavored Doritos or Pizzarias which were a totally different product, and one that my stepdaughter laments it's loss.

the more I think about it, the more I wonder if you've just been hit by regional distinctions on a few products that I'd swear I've seen recently in stores.

Could be. I know for a fact Doo-Dads and the Toastesttes are gone, but evidently a few of those can still be found here and there like the Jello-O pudding pops. I've seen fudge bars everywhere of course, but I haven't seen the Jell-O variety in ages.

Also, you can still evidently get the Welch's grape juice in the small aluminum cans but they have pop tabs now instead of the little sticker thing you had to peel back. I haven't seen them in years though.

And you may be right about the Pizzarias. I honestly can't remember. It was a pizza flavored Dorito shaped chip, but I can't remember if they were actual Doritos or not. They were sooo good though.

Toastettes were the shiz-NIGHT!

Totally agree they blew away pop-tarts. Crispier and with a buttery flavor. Damn those were good, thank you for reminding me.

And the planters cheez-ballz were also allsome. And I hate cheese puffs. But something about the Planters made them so much better than anything else.

This sounds like Kinder Surprise. If that's what you are talking about, they are actually egg shaped, and come foil wrapped in an orange and white package.

The company, be it Nestle or somebody else I don't know, makes a whole range of chocolate products, but honestly, the chocolate itself sucks so the only reason to buy their products is to get the Kinder Surprise with the little toy inside. (Same idea as Cracker Jacks.)

To the point, you can still get the other chocolate treats in the US, but our fine government that is always interested in protecting us from foreign dangers has listed the Kinder Surprise as a choking hazard and will seize any such candies they can find being imported to the United States. So if, while on vacation, you pick up a couple of Kinder Surprises for the niece and nephew, and if as a protection against crotch bombing, Homeland Security searches your bags -- they will grab your candy and throw it away.

I haven't been that big on Doritos since they made it more cheesey in the late 80s/early 90s. The cheese just over-powers the goodness that was the chip.

They finally brought back Toasted Corn Doritos. I get a lot of crap for this, but I can't stand "flavored" chips. I like plain corn chips, plain potato chips, plain pretzels. I just cannot stomach anything with the awful "flavor powder" on them. Maybe if the chip itself actually tasted like something other than just a corn chip with MSG dust on it...
