Declaring that there is no college football without a Tebow in the game, Urban Meyer stepped down this evening as head coach of the University of Florida Gators. In a move that caught the entire sports world by surprise, Meyer was quoted as saying, "Even the mighty Tim Tebow can't heal a broken heart."

When asked who the number on candidate to replace Meyer, Florida's AD replied, "Duh! Bob Stoops. We've got beaches."

Oh and I should correct myself from earlier in the thread..it's a cyst, not a tumor.

In a story published by Sports Illustrated this week, Meyer revealed that doctors discovered an arachnoid cyst on his brain when he worked as an assistant coach at Notre Dame in 1998.

According to the report, doctors didn't consider the cyst to be life-threatening but told Meyer he could suffer from head pain if the condition flared up because of stress.

The biggest news after the resignation itself is the timing and the unexpectedness of the announcement.

So will this be the start of dominoes falling with a successful coach from another program jumping ship to take the Florida job, leaving that school in the lurch after the bowl games, potentially to poach someone from yet another school and so on till finally an assistant is promoted or someone out-of-work is brought in?

I bet Charlie Strong is at home cursing to himself about his bad luck, going from being in the right place at the wrong time, to the wrong place at the right time.

And of course, the wooing of and hopefully, refusal by OUr Bob Stoops.

June Jones would be a good hire.

Charlie Strong is definitely kicking himself for the bad luck from the Football Gods.

And what about Brian Kelly? Took the job at Notre Dame too soon... should have gone to Florida where the university actually supports the program by investing in the facilities.

But would there be less pressure to win at Florida or at Notre Dame? Facing the pressures of a modern winning program or battling the history of a program past its prime with very lofty expectations.

It's already been said several times that there is no immediate health crisis. The heart rumor has been debunked also. In one statement/interview, Urban stated he thought about stepping down several years ago but decided he owed more to Florida due to the contract.

JMO, but I think he has trouble handling the stress of a high profile job. Now that he has to face the prospect of rebuilding UF, the prospect of dealing with demanding UF fans during a possible 7-5 or 8-4 season has become too much for him to handle. If that is the case, I hope he finds some peace and lives a long time.

I also think this was a HUGE surprise to Foley. If he had a clue this would happen, Charlie Strong would not have accepted the Louisville job earlier this month.

jdsooner
12/27/2009, 02:10 AM
"College coaching has become a 24/7, 365-day profession, in no small part because of Meyer’s never-ending work habits. He was one of the coaches who sent so many text messages to recruits that the NCAA had to rewrite its rules. He’d study film into the wee hours, smashing remote controls when he saw things he didn’t like. He’d arrive at work before sunrise and be lucky to leave at midnight. He’d jump a plane to recruit down in Fort Myers as soon as drive across town."

Never liked him. Still don't. I don't see how this guy is going to be able to handle not having a job.

Well provided the information about Strong not signing his Louisville deal yet is accurate he'd be a strong candidate based on Foley's past history of hiring. Kyle Wittingham would be a target, although I'm not sure he would want to leave his comfort zone (played at BYU, coached at Oregon St. and Utah). Bronco Mendenhall is a potential candidate nobody talks about over at BYU.

But honestly, if Chris Peterson ever wants to be taken seriously outside of Boise, Idaho he should have had his people on the phone to Foley less than 5 minutes after the news first broke.
