The best way to honor Mao would be to murder and starve 60 million Chinese. Mao would have gotten a big kick out of that.

"Our starting point was a very simple idea," she said. "That we include people in as many places, in as many ways as we can. We took about 800 ornaments left over from the previous administrations. We sent them to 60 local community groups throughout the country and asked them to decorate them, paying tribute to a favorite local landmark, and then send them back to us for display here at the White House.

Lord help us. I hope these dopes aren't doing this with the historical paintings around the White House.

The man has a job at which he does his best everyday. He's also a property owner and a producer -- as in he works for his living . Both of which result in a substantial tax burden I fear is about to grow when the inevitable hue and cry from the left begins in earnest next year to finance all their social-meddling to give more to chronic losers who aren't worth the investment -- in exchange for said rabble's vote.

I'm also proud to call him my friend. Frankly, I don't know WTF you are, but I know this. This country is absolutely dependent on people like Dean for its continued survival.

Hey, I have a lot of those Mao buttons. I bought them about 15 years ago in a street market in China. They may be authenic or just made to look old. It is really a sign of the clever and capitalistic Chinese despite how the demagogues want to paint it. Yeah, the guy was just bad, bad news all the way around.

I don't really care if there was a Mao tree in the White House. It is not like his ideas have any relevance or significance to the US or modern China.

But, the transvestite bobble is pretty cool, in my opinion. I want one of those buttons.

No, seriously, what were the problems that Mr Bush forced us to tolerate? Listening in on private phone calls w/o a warrant? Let's see, Obama still does this, and fought to keep the right.

Terrorists in Guantanamo? I think that's still going on, last I checked.

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? At least Obama has ended those. Oh, wait, maybe not.

Let's all be honest here -- George W. Bush took personal blame from the Democrats for purely political reasons. I used to tell my Dem friends, you know the big mouthed ones that accused Bush of being a "war criminal", that whoever was the next president would continue all those controversial policies -- mainly because they were the right policies.

But the Dems saw a chance to take down a sitting, war-time president and take over the Congress. And they were succesful with that strategy. Congrats to them.

Let the GOP go to work this fall.

maybe the ornament was sent back to the white house, and the staffer or volunteer who saw it didn't recognize that it was mao on the ornament before they hung it up....

I am on board with this -- blame it on the staffer. Staffers make a lot of mistakes, and they take the blame for a lot more mistakes -- and I am certain that Michelle Obama herself did not sit down and consciously make the decision that "You know, this Mr Mao fellow really had some good ideas, including mass murder, so let's honor him on our Christmas tree." Believe me, NEVER did the Obamas intend to honor one of history's greatest butchers on their tree.

The trick is to use the Mao-ornament fiasco as a glass to look more deeply into the White House. What does it mean? Is it more than a simple clerical error?

This incident is clearly embarrassing for the Obamas and therefore it shouldn't have happened. What if an ornament carried an image of Hitler? Or Stalin?

My guess is something along these lines happened -- the ornament came in, and the directly responsible decision makers -- which may have included the First Lady or not -- said "Who is this guy?" IF no one knew, I guarantee you that it would not have gone on the tree. Best guess here is that (scenario 1) some staffer either mis-identified Mao as someone non-controversial, or (scenario 2) a staffer IDd him correctly as Mao, but thought that Mao would not be controversial.

Scenario 1 -- In this case, it would be shockingly shoddy staff work. To put up an ornament on the living symbol of Christmas in the living symbol of the United States w/o knowing who is displayed on it is amateurish beyond belief. It is the type of thing that happens in a staff headed by a badly inexperienced executive -- but probably means nothing more than that the Obamas have not yet got their feet under them.

Scenario 2 -- If they knew it was Mao but didn't think it would be a problem, then we have a more serious problem. First, a simple check of wikipedia would have revealed that "Mao's policies and political purges from 1949 to 1975 are widely believed to have caused the deaths of between 50 to 70 million people." If they missed that, then again, AT BEST very shoddy, amateurish staff work.

But more troubling is the possibility that the decision-makers involved -- that might or might not have included the First Lady -- knew it was Mao, but viewed him as something of a hero. He has been painted as admirable by the left, similar to the violently brutal Che Gueverra, and I am willing to bet even odds that the lefties in the rooms thought putting him up there would be a smart move. (Remember that the staffer in this White House are going to be FAR FAR more left than the Oklahoma Democratic Party.)

For example, the first paragraph in the Wikipedia entry for Mao reads as a description of the "heroic Mao" vision used to justify the existence of the Chinese Communist state. It reads, Mao "is officially held in high regard in China as a great revolutionary, political strategist, military mastermind, and savior of the nation. Many Chinese also believe that through his policies, he laid the economic, technological and cultural foundations of modern China, transforming the country from a backward agrarian society into a major world power. Additionally, Mao is viewed by many as a poet, philosopher, and visionary, owing the latter primarily to the cult of personality fostered during his time in power."

My best guess is that the lefties in the Obama staff (possibly including the First Lady) had that "heroic Mao" image in mind, and thought that putting Mao up there wouldn't cause any problems. They probably also thought that it might be a good means of reaching out to the rising People's Republic. And they probably even thought it would be a good way to be "inclusive" regarding Chinese-Americans -- few of whom even celebrate Christmas.

They probably wore t-shirts with Mao's picture on it back in college, and folks in the far left districts of suburban Chicago probably find alot to admire in the old Chinese "poet, philosopher and visionary."

And I am betting that is where the mistake was made, and that is why Mao was on the White House Christmas tree.

Is this a legitimate political issue? I'll first answer that anything that happens in the public White House is by definition a legitimate political issue. If the Bush's had hung an ornament honoring a Grand Dragon of the KKK on their tree, it would have been a legitimate political issue. If the Clinton's had hung Fidel Castro or Che Guaverra on their tree, it would have been a legitimate political issue.

In all honesty, I've been on the road. Left last Friday for Tucson, drove through all that ****, and got home last night.

Anyhow, this hella boy wants me dead huh? For being a latent racist? Or was that for being an outright white sheet wearing card carrying member of the KKK? I'm a little confused here.

Before I go put a size 13 Justin up this little dweeb's penis receptacle, I will make a couple things as clear as I can. Bear with me please.

I am prejudiced. Against a whole lot of ****. Blacks, mexicans, asians, indians, liberals, commies, stupid people of all races, religious whackos of all varieties, atheists, PETA, hunters without morals, gays, lawyers, doctors, longhorns (both the cattle breed and the fags down in Austin), ****ty drivers, and most especially muslims. That's me, and I ain't ashamed to admit it.

Next, all of you who have the audacity to say "I ain't prejudiced" are nothing more than ****ing liars. I don't care what race/color/creed/religion you are. EVERYONE is prejudiced against all kinds of ****.

Now, the next question is who/what is a racist? In my simple mind, a racist is someone who hates everyone who is a member of a certain race. Am I wrong here? Under my definition, I am anything but a racist. If you're willing to work hard, pay your dues and taxes, and contribute to society in a positive way I really don't care what color you are, what church you go to, or where you stick your little dick at night.

So, being prejudiced as I am, it is quite common for me to say things like:

"Who wants to bet they're black" when I hear a TV guy going "down on NE 23rd a liquor store robbery went horribly wrong and the owner was killed..."

or

"bet they're mexicans" when I hear "there was a gang related shooting at the La Hacienda bar down on SW 29th last night..."

or

"****ing ragheads" when I hear "some dumbass tried to blow up a plane/train/automobile/market/bus/embassy/church..."

or

"****ing fags" when I hear "gays and lesbians are having another parade and protest down at the capital..."

All this being said, there are gays, blacks, asians, mexicans, religious nuts, atheists, and even muslims whom I consider good friends and folks I'd trust with pretty much anything. Why? Cause they're good decent people. They work. They pay their bills. They pay their taxes. They contribute to society in a positive way. I also believe that MOST Americans feel pretty much like I do. At least I'd hope they were honest enough to admit it anyhow.

So, Mr/Ms Hella Sideburns, you may assume the position now. Not for wishing me dead or thinking I'm a racist, simply for being so ****ing stupid you don't deserve to exist here anymore. The sooner close-minded hypocrites like you are banned, the better off we all will be.

With all due respect to Collier, there is little difference between being racist and prejudiced. Prejudice means pre-judging and is obviously more broad-based, including women, gays, religious beliefs, ect. A racist would be prejudice based on race, obviously. I concede that the connotations could be viewed slightly different given our country’s history of racism, but it is only that.

Dean’s reply was, frankly speaking, disappointing. It was honest and, for that, I have to admire his willingness to state what many posters here think. But, it was also contemptible, in my opinion, and pretty much means that if anyone wants rights, they have to fight for them and change long-standing prejudiced views and if that means going against the flow on a message boards or parading around, so be it.

Working hard, being productive and paying taxes probably earns everyone's respect. But, that wasn't the issue.

We have had this discussion before. Dean wants gays to go back in the closet and shut the **** up. He doesn’t care what gays do in the privacy of their own home, but he also doesn’t want gays to parade down at the capital (I guess he was in Maryland when he posted this). The fact that a certain population in the US is being denied their fair share of constitutional rights is not and will not be an issue when the putdown is “…I go put a size 13 Justin up this little dweeb's penis receptacle.” Okay, that was colorful and funny, but the stinging part is that gays are just good for a joke. Otherwise go away.

Dean says he has good friends that are gays, blacks, asians, mexicans, religious nuts, atheists, and even muslims. And, do you think any of them would remain good friends with Dean after reading that post?

Moderators set the tone on a message board. I just hope that Dean’s post does not mean the tone on this board is open season on minorities or let loose on prejudiced views.

Dean expressed an opinion and he should be able to take a counter opinion, even if it is way, way over the top.

Chuck,

I'm really not much different in real life as I am on this board. I'm opinionated, way too judgmental, but honest. Brutally so.

My friends that are gay (since I'm assuming this is the one big stick up the .....no, I won't do it again) know my feelings about homosexuality very clearly. They respect them because I respect their right to boink whoever they want and don't chastise them for it - just like they don't chastise me for liking the poon. Their sexuality (or race/religion/creed/etc.) is a complete NON-ISSUE when we work together or hang out. Now I must admit they don't sit there going "I'm gay, I'm gay" or I'd probably not hang around with them.

I seriously think you're confusing "rights" with "acceptance." You have the right to do whatever you want. I have the right to not accept it as moral/righteous/good/etc. What you want is total acceptance of your lifestyle choice - including legislation that gives you = rights to married couples, etc. I don't think that's right. My opinion.

Now all this does remind me of something that happened a few months ago. I was working out in the gym and a certain lesbian friend of mine was jogging on the track. We started talking, and she was all bent out of shape because her long-time partner had flown the coup with a younger/hotter chick. It was kind of surreal, because our conversation was that of one guy trying to cheer up another guy. It did get to a point where I asked her if she ever did even try a man. She looked at me and said "Dean, what do you prefer? A big, hairy *** or a nice smooth one? Do you like rubbing whiskers? Do you like a man snoring or man BO?" I go "nope." She goes "exactly." I go "I completely see your point."

Anyhow, don't take it all to seriously Chuck. Nobody is gonna run around here firing off racist schtick just because I posted something about all of us being prejudiced against a lot of crap. If they do, let me know.

IMO, Racism is a form of prejudice. If you are racist then you are prejudiced against certain people.

I think I know where you could go with your statement though. By certain definitions you could be a racist and not be prejudiced... I guess. I might disagree with that notion though. An example would be if someone thinks white people are superior to all other "races", then that might only be racist and not prejudiced.

If you hate all white people for being white that is racist and prejudice.

If you hate all homosexuals, you are just prejudiced against homosexuals.

Thats all I got. LOL.

Oh, and the christmas ornament with Obama on Mt Rushmore.... lets just say that it's that type of shiit why I don't like him. There is absolutely nothing special about this president, nothing.

Hating a race is prejudice, has little to do with being racist. Being racist is
using your power (at whatever level) to discriminate or hold back another race do to that hate.

Atleast that is how it was taught to me

I think you can still be racist and not act out on your racist thoughts.

IMO, racism doesn't have to be acted out to be racism. If you just think you are superior than someone else because of either their race or yours, you are a racist.

Collier11

not stating out and out that I am right, I took several African American, European American, and Native American culture classes in college and that is how it was always taught to me, that Racism is to have the ability to hold back a person of another race by means of power...good discussion though

Fraggle145

IMO, predjudice forms out of stereotypes. And no matter what, human beings will stereotype things as a means of cataloging information so that you dont have to think over every minute detail every time you make a decision. It's the same basis for when we know something is a "cat" or a "dog" etc... The ability to catalog and stereotype has been evolutionarily selected for. Prejudice or prejudgement (as stated earlier in the thread) are just judgments based on those stereotypes. In our society it has been given a negative context, but we do it all the time with respect to pretty much everything. If you want to change prejudice, IMO you have to change stereotypes, and ultimately behavior.

Collier11
12/29/2009, 06:04 PM
also, stereotyping has been given a negative connotation when alot of times it is true. If I say white people are good at baseball and golf and not as good at football and basketball, it is a stereotype but it is mostly true. If I say black people like chicken, it is a stereotype but mostly true.

Dean,

Dude, we all cool. I agree with a lot that you posted and the rest (particularly about the rights) we can agree to disagree. Call it something besides marriage and I wouldn’t care as long as the rights are the same.

In real life, I’m still in the closet. But buy a vowel - an unmarried 48-year old?!!??!!!! Part of that is due to Thai culture where you don’t force confrontations. I would never, ever sit around and tell friends “I’m gay, I’m gay, I’m gay.” It wouldn’t happen and you could hang out with me without that, I guess, embarrassing dialogue or association.

It is not a problem that you have your opinions and I have mine. I like that. I would not want you to water down your opinions, ever. I will never PM you to complain and I can stand up for myself, yeah even if that means the occasional ill-conceived and foolish post.

I think Dean has a very valid point. Everybody is prejudiced against something. Most people just don't admit it.

It might be against rival football team fans. It might be against homosexuals. Or against asians. Or white people. Or inner city people. Or rich people. Or poor people. Homeless people. Muslims. Rednecks. You name it.

It isn't these psychological barriers that pose the problem. It's using them as a basis for discrimination or some action against a group of people or an individual that fits a certain description.

It's human nature to categorize and stereotype. Overcoming all of that is what defines compassion.

Even Christ was prejudiced (see the woman of Canaan in Matthew 15). His compassion was defined by his overcoming his prejudices.

So maybe Dean is Christlike for having gay friends. ;)

You can't have been indoctrinated by family and friends for years and suddenly just change over night. I think we are seeing adjusted in our society that require people to use common sense and workout there differences. Humor and forgiveness is just as important as avoiding a militant type of response when a person hears something that may make them feel uncomfortable. For me it was pubic hair in my food and getting a bad cut of meat at a b-b-q place or a small stocked plate when others plates that are eating are loaded.

Mess with a man's food and expect to get a conversation with whoever is in charge at the restaurant. Watch some buxom babe just shuffle through the line to get into a club while you weight in line...it's always been that way.

Try to stay calm and look for your shot and getting a perk instead of be so damn demanding. You'll get more honey than anal lube when you do this with low emotion. It might take a bit more time....but in the end...you won't get shuffled through and out the back door in 5 minutes.
