Any of you guys ever whittle? I've been working on this huge piece of corn oak since last July. I'm doing the face of Soupy Sales in it.

It's gonna be a good one.

Actually, what you are doing is carving. Whittlin is just slice off pieces of the stick for the purpose of keeping you hands occupied.

Actually it started out as whittling. You see as you whittle, you remove negative space in order to start the real intricate carving.

Try to keep up.

That's what I've always known it as, though inevitably the whittling turns into carving (usually). I haven't whittled in a while... Need me a good piece of cedar.

Supposedly (I don't have a link), Michaelangelo was asked how he created such a masterpiece as his statue of David. His answer was that he simply found the correct piece of marble and cut away the parts that were not David.

As a kid, I enjoyed whittling. It always ended up the same... an arrow.

I'd take a small green branch and a scrap of twine to make the bow.

Spend the rest of the day shooting arrows at a soup can.

Video games... GET OFF MY LAWN!
