Every so often a buddy and I do an song parody for the Sooners.
We could not pass on the opportunity for the Marty Robbins classic since we are in the Sun Bowl this year.
The recording is not made yet, but here are the lyrics:
Marty Robbins, El Paso Lyrics
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
The Sun Bowl came calling for Stoops and the Gang.
The season had started with injuries and chaos;
Now we just hope we’ll go out with a bang.
Blacker than night was the curse on the Sooners,
Wicked and evil; someone cast a spell.
Our love was deep for Bob Stoops and the Fellas;
We were in awe but in vain, we could tell.
Our offense had promised to be so high pow’r
The kind that makes defenses pray.
Fake snapping and glaring,
Like a Meerkat was staring
At the sideline of coaches,
To signal the play.
So in anger I
Watched as Sam Bradford was leveled and broken.
This team without Bradford was my greatest fear
My question was answered in less than a quarter;
The Heisman returner was out for the year.
Murray and Brown just lost yards on the ground
Behind 3rd string lineman …Oh NO!!!!
Under center or shotgun.
Still we could not run.
So 7 and 5 was the
way it would go
And That’s why we got the
Call from the West Texas town of El Paso
At least Landry Jones is from New Mexico.
Back in El Paso a win can’t be counted.
The offense is gone , but our Defense is stout.
It's been so long since we’ve hung half-a-hundred
We need to hold Stanford to ten 3 and outs
I packed the van and away I did go
Traveling to cheer on my team
Maybe tomorrow
A Bowl Loss may find us.
But for now, in my mind, I’ll keep livin’ the dream
And at last here I
Am on the hill overlooking El Paso;
I can see UTEP in the valley below.
My love is strong and it pushes me onward.
Down off the hill to the Sun Bowl I go.
Off to my right I see Mexican Drug Lords;
Off to my left are gangs known for their crime.
Shouting and shooting I can't let them mug me.
I have to make it to pregame on time.
Something went dreadfully wrong this whole year
The injuries coming in droves!
Not just Bradford and Gresham
Eldridge and Cooper,
But back-ups to back-ups were,
Filling the holes.
But my love for the
Sooners is strong, I’m no bandwagon follow’r,
Though it’s been dreary I’ll stick with my team.
I see the white puff of smoke from the rufneks.
I see the stands filled with Crimson and Cream.
From out the tunnel, the Sooners come charging,
They wave to the fans as they head to the side
The Pride plays the fight song, Our hands raised for Kick-off
One Sun Bowl win and to ’09 , good-bye.
