View Full Version : Dream Job Offer

Has anyone ever been offered what they consider to be their "dream job" but had to decline for whatever reason? Like let's say it's half-way across the country in a city with a very high cost of living and you just don't have the finances to move, or you can't uproot your family, or you're committed to something else for a period of time in which the job won't be available when you are, etc?

How did you or would you handle such a thing? Would you just screw it all and do whatever you had to do to take the job?

Yes. I had my 'dream job" and it turned out to be a massive disappointment in practice.

Really, in what way if you don't mind me asking? The pay? Coworkers? Job responsibilities? Or was it just not at all what you dreamed it would be?

And what was the job?

You're young, single, and unattached. Ain't much to lose man. It could be a giant bucket of ****, or it could be almost as cool as you think it is. If it's a giant bucket of ****, well, big deal, it didn't work out. But don't pass on something that could be good for the fear of failure or you'll spend your entire live looking for that next big thing.

Not the same thing, but in 1990 I had the opportunity to buy a 2 year old Porsche 911 Turbo at less than bargain basement price. I really didn't need it, couldn't afford it, and couldn't justify it. Then, a friend of mine told me that if I didn't pull the trigger on it, I would always wonder "What if".

I bought it. Owned it for six months. Sold it and never looked back. At that time a Porsche was basically a VW on steroids; no creature comforts to speak of. The insurance was more than my mortgage. Nonetheless, I am not sitting here wondering "What if".

Take the job. Life is full of risks and disappointments. You may end up disappointed, but you may end up in your dream job. Either way, you will not be wondering "What if" in another 20 years.

Well, it's not that I don't want to take it. There's nothing more in the world I want than to take it...the problem is there's just no logistical way for me to accept it. I can't figure out how to shuffle things around in such a way that I can be in a position to take it.

I'm going to try to find a way to do it and if I can then I will. It's just coming at pretty much the worst time in my life. It's hard to see how I can make it happen.

It just kills me though because I want it really bad, but I see no way I can realistically accept.

Mostly, last year was a ****ty year to be an investment banker, and basically the company ignored every recommendation I made and abandoned the project I was working on after they overruled my recommendations and things fell apart exactly like I had laid out for them. On the upside, my current job is a much better deal, with more upside. While the actual job was a massive disappointment, I don't regret taking it at all, as it has turned into a nice jumping off point.

I thought you had a job in the Ag business. I don't doubt it's a ****ty time to be an investment banker. Are you still in Omaha?

There are investment bankers that specialize in Ag. It's a very capital intensive business that requires specialized knowledge. I'm back in Lincoln now doing risk management and grain trading.

Well, the cheap answer would be to say self-respect. The real answer is that I just liked the business side of agriculture a lot more.

With all due respect, SicEm, this is all gobbledy gooch. You haven't stated one reason you can't take it.

If you're not going to follow your dreams....you're going to live a life of regret IMO.

When folks say they can't take their dream job....it's a cop out IMO. Just saying Dream Job implies that you would live your Dream.

You're here trying to get folks to feel sorry for you as you pass on your Dreams.

That's the stupiest thing I ever heard. Unless you are going to state some valid reasons for passing on the job....I have to think that you've never learned a damn thing at Baylor.

Seriously SicEm....take the damn job or get some therapy that will help you uncover what your dream job really is...

If you really want the job, you will take the job. It's that simple. This doesn't need to turn into five pages of Sicem fail.

Have you suffered from a bout of amnesia recently? You KNOW this is exactly what is going to happen, it's inevitable!

:D

(sorry SicEm, I couldn't help it. And StoopTroop is right, if this is truly your dream job, then nothing and I mean NOTHING should be standing in your way. If it is, get it out of the way. You have no choice, it really is that simple.)

To answer your question Sic'em, I have never let obstacles stand in the way of my dream job, even when the job was on the other side of the world. My family understood and supported my decision. And, this is a very different world than 20+ years ago given that we now have the internet, cheap phone rates and cheap airfares if you plan enough in advance. In fact, I really don't think my family misses me so much and if they needed me, they know where to find me.

If you are going to el paso, and go through Waco, you're doing it wrong.

Oh and this thread shouldn't go any further without the following 2 things:

1. What is the dream job?

2. Why can't you take it?

Anything else us AW'ing.

Sic em, if this is a political thing, PM me. We'll talk.
