El Paso has one of the lowest crime rates of major cities in the US; it has half the violent crimes that Oklahoma City does.

So true. El Paso is an armpit. San Antonio, would have been there, El Paso, not a chance.

No way and I going any closer to Mexico than I have to. I am already too close and if you do go to El Paso, be very careful. I would even leave the passport at home to resist temptation. Not worth it at all if you wanna cross the border.

I was in El Paso last month and it doesn't seem any worse than any other city. Juarez is another story. People all over the country will tell you do NOT go into Juarez. Locals in El Paso will tell you ABSOLUTELY do not go into Juarez...

A friend of mine is a professor at UTEP. Several years ago we crossed over to Jaurez to have a drink at the legendary Kentucky Room.... supposedly every movie star from the 40's and 50's used to go there. Anyway he said their is no way in Hell that he would go over there right now.... this calendar year alone, Jaurez has had more than 1200 murders from the drug war. This is one city, folks..... but believe me- our drug policy is working perfectly.

legalize it and tax the hell of out it and we solve the crime problem and balance the budget.

.....and it's not like anyone's having trouble buying whatever they want as it is. Declare victory/defeat and move on.

Our drug policy seems to be working better than Mexico's gun policy.

Hey folks,

I live here in El Paso and joined the board because I was very excited to hear the Sooners would be coming to El Paso...I know the Sooners travel extremely well and your game day atmosphere is a sight to behold!

That said, I'm disappointed at the comments/perceptions about El Paso. I've lived here for 15 years now and I can assure you: DON'T pass up the Sun Bowl opportunity because you fear the violence in Juarez.

Just follow one simple rule: DON'T go to Juarez when you're here.

Frankly, I haven't been over there in two years and I miss it less and less. A few selling points:

1. El Paso is recognized as one of the safest cities in the U.S. We only had one -- one --- drug related murder and the suspects were caught in 48 hours. The criminals in Juarez know we have a professional police force, unlike there, and they will be caught and prosecuted. Thus, no similar crimes.

2. A border wall/fence(s) is in place, and has been since 1996. Border Patrol trucks are stationed every quarter mile along the metropolitan area. Cameras and evesdropping devices everywhere. The border reminds me of the Berlin Wall. In fact, it's more secure than that. I do not exaggerate.

3. There's tons of restaurants and bars in El Paso to keep you happy. Many of the best ones are right near the Sun Bowl. World HQ for tequila and Mexican food, not to mention great steaks. Incidentally, alot of the restaurants and bars formerly in Juarez have moved to El Paso (e.g., Aroma, Maria Cucina, Barriga's, Villa Del Mar). Mexico comes to us now.

4. Add a warm winter climate, mild temperature and low humidity, the Sun Bowl is a great place to watch a football game. It's sunny 300+ days a year here.

5. Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino is within eyesight of the Sun Bowl.

6. Great place to buy those cowboy boots. Cheap.

I know the Juarez violence brings a terrible perception. I also know that leads to the perception El Paso is equally bad, but it's simply not at all true. No fear, no worries. Just DON'T go over the border.

Hope this helps. PM me if you need any info. on places to go, stay, eat, drink, whatever. Hope I can help. Hope you fill the Sun Bowl.

I agree with that post. El Paso really is relatively safe. I'm more likely to get caught up in drug violence here in Vegas.

As for Juarez, Anderson Cooper has been running a bunch of stuff all week about it. 12-13 drug murders PER DAY down there. That's friggin' insane.

So go to the damned game if you can afford it, but get your weed, coke, booze, and hookers on the US side and be safe for Christ's sake!

Perception is one thing.

If it is reality you want, the last place that I remember a Sooner going to a game was shot to death was Dallas . . .

Thanks for the information. We are going to the Sun Bowl. Spent the night in El Paso in Dec 2002 and even then all they said was not to cross the border. With Fort Bliss there, I am not worried. Looking forward to visiting El Paso again and having a great time. Ready to win a Bowl Game!
