He was joined on the first team by Cowboy cornerback Perrish Cox, along with Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, defensive end Jeremy Beal and offensive tackle Trent Williams.
The Sooners had five players named to the second team: receiver Ryan Broyles, linebacker Travis Lewis, cornerbacks Dom Franks and Brian Jackson and punter Tress Way.
OSU running back Keith Toston and linebacker Donald Booker, who both started out the year as backups, were the Cowboys’ two players to make the second team.
Texas and Nebraska, which will square off in Saturday’s Big 12 Championship, took home the major awards.
Texas’ Colt McCoy was the unanimous choice as the top quarterback on the squad, and was named the Big 12’s Offensive Player of the Year.
His coach, Mack Brown, was selected as the Coach of the Year.
And Nebraska tackle Ndamukong Suh was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Year.
Yet despite being divisional champs, Texas and Nebraska didn’t dominate the AP first-team, which was voted on by 20 sports writers who regularly cover the league for newspapers throughout the Big 12’s seven-state region. In fact, all 12 league teams had at least one first-teamer.
Other special honors went to Kansas State running back Daniel Thomas, named Offensive Newcomer of the Year, and Missouri freshman defensive end Aldon Smith, selected Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
Among the state’s players to be named honorable mention were OSU quarterback Zac Robinson and OU offensive lineman Brody Eldridge.
