Per Soonersports...

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma Vice President/Athletics Director Joe Castiglione and head coach Sunny Golloway released the Sooners’ 2010 baseball schedule consisting of 56 regular season games on Wednesday.

Overall, Oklahoma will face 12 opponents, for a total of 28 games, that participated in last year’s NCAA Tournament, including five non-conference opponents in Arkansas, Indiana, Jacksonville, San Diego State and TCU.

Five of the 12 NCAA participants from 2009 (Arkansas, Kansas State, San Diego State, TCU and Texas) recorded 40 or more wins a year ago, while Arkansas (College World Series), TCU (Super Regional) and Texas (College World Series) advanced deep into the tournament.

The Sooners will kick things off on Feb. 19 in the San Diego State Tournament held at Tony Gwynn Stadium. OU begins action in San Diego against the host Aztecs. The Sooners also face Indiana and San Diego over the weekend.

The SDSU Tournament is just one of four that the Sooners will participate in during the 2010 regular season. Following the trip to San Diego, OU travels across the country to Florida for the Jacksonville Tournament hosted by Jacksonville University. OU will face a trio of first-time opponents in Valparaiso, Jacksonville and Richmond.

Oklahoma will host its first regular season tournament in Norman from March 4-7 as South Florida, Western Illinois and Stephen F. Austin visit L. Dale Mitchell Park for the Sooner Classic. The 1985 season was the last time OU hosted a regular season tournament (Knor Sooner Shootout) but it was held at the All Sports Stadium in Oklahoma City.

The fourth and final tournament, The Whataburger Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, is one of the top tourneys in Division I baseball each of the last five years. The 2010 field includes OU, Mississippi State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UCLA.

The non-conference slate also features home games against Dallas Baptist, Houston Baptist, Massachusetts, Arkansas Pine Bluff, TCU, Memphis and Arkansas, while OU travels to DBU, TCU and Oklahoma State for midweek games.

The game on Tuesday, April 13 with OSU marks the first year that the OU-OSU Series will be extended to four regular season games, with the home team alternating each season. The contest will not count towards either team’s Big 12 records and the Cowboys will return the trip in 2011.

“Year in and year out we look to schedule some of the best non-conference competition in order to prepare us for the grueling Big 12 season,” said Golloway. “This year’s schedule is once again evidence of that. We are excited for our fans as we host several exciting match ups at home in and out of conference play, including the extra OU-OSU game.”

The 27-game Big 12 schedule begins at home against Baylor (March 19-21). The Bears are the first of four 2009 NCAA Tournament teams to visit Norman in Big 12 play. OU also welcomes Texas (April 1-3), Missouri (April 9-11) and Kansas State (April 30-May 2) for three-game sets.

The Big 12 road series include Nebraska (March 26-28), Texas Tech (April 16-18), Texas A&M (April 23-25) and Kansas (May 21-23).

The OU-OSU Series, presented by The Oklahoman and Oklahoma Farm Bureau Insurance, will be held May 7-9. Game one between OU and Oklahoma State is set for May 7 in Tulsa at Drillers Stadium. Then the teams return to Oklahoma City for the final two games of the series slated for May 8 and 9 at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament will be held in Oklahoma City at the Bricktown Ballpark from Wednesday, May 26 through Sunday, May 30.

The NCAA Tournament begins on campus sites with the NCAA Regional (June 4-7) and NCAA Super Regional (June 11-14). The 2010 College World Series will be played in Omaha, Neb., at Rosenblatt Stadium from June 19-30.

The Sooners return 17 letterwinners from the 2009 squad that made the program’s fourth appearance in an NCAA Regional Final in the last five years. OU finished second in the Big 12 standings and earned a No. 7 national seed while hosting a regional for the second time in four years.

Interesting midweek, non-conference game with OSU in Stillwater. Glad to see OU and OSU come to terms on a yearly, true home game that will alternate every year.

I have been meaning to post on this since the day the schedule came out.

I love the NC schedule this year, I think it will give our young guys a great test. The mid-week OSU game is something I had heard was going to happen in the offseason and am glad that they will return the visit next year.

I am excited for the season to start, but I just hope everyone realizes that this team won't be the same talent it was last year. If the pitching can improve (Duke being back is huge) and the the bats can get hot (I've heard we have a DH that can hit HR's further than Dunnigan) we can finish in the top half of the Big 12.

I know this wasn't directed at anyone in particular, and I too realize we aren't gonna be national seed quality, but to me OU baseball is like sex, golf, and beer. It's not always great, but it's always good and fun to do.:)

OU baseball, sittin in the outfield heckling the right and center fielder, all while enjoying a beverage disguised as a fountain drink, does it get better?

I'll be on that 1st baseline with the other yardbirds givin em Hell all year long. I hope that we get great turnouts this year!

Man you yardbirds are awesome, keep up the good work. I too hope for good turnouts this year.

I have always been frustrated with OU's non-football support of its teams, especially baseball. I don't expect to be the whorns, I'm not that naive, but the student turnout is almost nothing, and there is no reason we can have 2000 people at each game. That is not to much to ask. I know there are a lot of people that don't like sunny, but he is building a good program, recruiting well, and scheduling well, as it is in basketball, it is up to the fans to take it to the next level.

How good are we expected to be this year? I assume that they will be one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the Big XII?

Depends on how some of our newcomers develop, we lost some guys to the draft that I dont know if they were expected to sign pro contracts and did

4th, 5th, or 6th i feel is where we will be. Replacing Wise and Hernandez is going to be tough but the offense wont be the problem. Starting pitching will be interesting to say the least. We'll avg 6 runs a game and team ERA will be in the high 4's

I agree. On Soonersports they released part one of the baseball preview and it has the projected depth chart with it. Our weekend rotation as of now is three new JUCO kids. Now with the turnover in baseball year in and year out it is almost impossible to gauge how good we will be, of course unless you're uterus, it just depends on if Cam, Garret, and Jamie improved over the off season and if the young arms are solid.

Need to at least split against Tony Gwynn's bunch. For me at least, I can't afford to being forced to listen to Mountain West Conference smack when I'm at the games out here. Then again, many locals don't like SDSU and had issues with Strasburg's behavior at times when he pitched here against UNM.

Here is the projected depth chart which includes two Juco and 1 true fresh starters in the field and two juco starters in the rotation

we return some decent bats, im interested to see these new guys

Ruf/Nek7
2/12/2010, 10:16 PM
Well the 3 JUCO pitchers are All-Americans and the great thing about college ball is there really isn't a tough transition. So long as they can keep those ERAs below 4.50 i would be happy.

Robinson was here last year if I femember correctly, so that is two new starters but either way, if you can pitch you can pitch so lets hope they are good

Ruf/Nek7
2/12/2010, 10:39 PM
Your memory serves you well....J.R. Robinson did pitch for us last year. 3-1 6.49 with 7 starts. Had a great start with San Diego, but other than that was very spotty but that was our entire pitching staff except for Duke!

2/12/2010, 10:57 PM
True, him and Doyle...damn I wish Doyle had come back

Ruf/Nek7
2/12/2010, 11:11 PM
true, i completely forgot about Doyle. I just want to take the series from texass this year and get a regional that favors us. We got the most ridiculous regional last year! Arkansas, Wichita St. and Washington St. while unseeded teams got toys r us teams.

Collier11
2/12/2010, 11:13 PM
Yep, we lost alot (johnson, doyle, hernandez, that bad A catcher whose name escapes me at the moment) if we can get to the tourney this year it will be a good accomplishment for Sonny

Ruf/Nek7
2/12/2010, 11:31 PM
yeah J.T. Wise was the catcher...man his batting numbers were astounding and his catching abilities were not shabby at all. I wonder were he went in the draft?

Collier11
2/12/2010, 11:41 PM
He was a 5th rounder by the Dodgers and Doyle was a 4th rounder, Richards a 1st rounder, those were the 1st 3 Sooners drafted.

Wise hit 338 in his 1st minor league season

Doyle was 3-1 with a 3.86 era

Richards was 3-1 with a 1.53 era

Bryant Hernandez hit 276., he flirted with 400. last yr as our SS

Ruf/Nek7
2/12/2010, 11:45 PM
Yeah Bryant was a suprise and he hit for power for us too. Im not shocked about Richards....had he not had tommy johns he would been a huge pick up for us. He transfered in from Tulane. Same could be said for Antwonie Hubbard. Another huge recruit that never lived up to potential because of injuries.

Collier11
2/12/2010, 11:50 PM
our pitchers have rarely lived up to the hype under Sonny, not sure why

Ruf/Nek7
2/13/2010, 02:37 AM
me neither...doesnt seem like any other school in the big 12 has that problem. Well OSUck did last year. Maybe we need a new pitching coach.

Collier11
2/13/2010, 02:43 AM
we just got a bad *** one 2 years ago, who knows

Ruf/Nek7
2/13/2010, 02:48 AM
well then maybe this is the year that all changes. I do believe it can take some years for a new coach to really settle in and produce. Besides we shouldnt miss a beat with our bats. Buechele, Johnson, and Ogle should pick right up. I feel we will have more patient hitters this year.

soonerguild
2/13/2010, 07:43 PM
We are ranked in the top 25 by 2, maybe 3 polls, preseason. I know they don't mean much but according to the polls we are the third best team in the conference. We should make the tourny for sure.

We lost a lot, but we have recruited fairly well. I think we can challenge uterus again for the conference, unfortunately they are the consensus preseason #1 this year.

Besides as far as pitchers living up to the hype, everyone knows that injuries happen to pitchers all the time, there is a reason the pro's have 4 levels of minor league ball. Unlike most sooner fans I think our staff has done an excellent job when you consider where the program was when galloway took over.

Ruf/Nek7
2/13/2010, 08:24 PM
I do give them credit for pulling in the recruiting classes that they do. We have been rather successful considering (and this is just my opinion) Galloway is not much of a coach. Much of his success is contributed to his years studying under Cochell. I would really just love to see the Crimson and Cream invade Omaha again.

Sounds like the coaches and the players are all pretty impressed and excited about about zach neal, hopefully he is the ace we need to be as competitive as we are predicted to be in the big 12. Friday night games are huge, especially when each series is only 3 games.

Tomorrow it starts.

Please Dear God give us a team and a season we can cheer for and be happy with. We know we must have irritated you somehow since our promising football and basketball seasons have been crushed before our very eyes. Please forgive us and throw us a little baseball bone. Por Favor?

Amen.
