Well, Mark Richt is not afraid to make changes when things are not going good...

ATHENS, Ga. -- Following a 7-5 season, Georgia coach Mark Richt on Wednesday fired three members of his defensive coaching staff, including embattled coordinator Willie Martinez.

ESPN's Joe Schad earlier reported that Georgia wouldn't retain Martinez, who spent the past five seasons as coordinator of the Bulldogs' defense. Richt also fired defensive ends coach Jon Fabris and linebackers/defensive co-coordinator John Janceck.

"It was definitely not a one-year, knee-jerk reaction to one season, I can promise you that," Richt said in a telephone interview. "It was more a decision that was made over the course of time, more time than just one year."

Richt says the three have been asked to remain through the team's bowl game.

The Bulldogs ranked No. 71 nationally in scoring defense (26.4 points per game) and 90th in pass-efficiency defense (137.14 rating). Georgia allowed 30 points or more in five games this season.

Georgia finished 4-4 in the Southeastern Conference.

"The bottom line is we want to get back to the top of the Eastern Divivsion and the top of the SEC," Richt said. "That's the goal and that's what we're going after.

"We want to make sure we're playing Georgia ball, playing with the type of speed and intensity that it takes to be champions."

Richt said he met with the three assistants Wednesday before revealing the moves to players at a team meeting. He said he planned to begin calling recruits on Wednesday night.

Martinez said in a statement released by Georgia he was grateful "for nine great years in Athens" and noted he was proud "to have been an integral part" of two SEC championships.

He did not say if he will remain for the bowl game.

There were criticisms of Martinez and the Georgia defense in 2008 when the Bulldogs were ranked No. 1 in the preseason but finished 10-3 while giving up more than 40 points in losses to Alabama, Florida and Georgia Tech.

Martinez and Fabris where hired for Richt's first staff in 2001. Jancek joined the Georgia staff in 2005.

Martinez was promoted from secondary coach to defensive coordinator in 2005. Georgia ranked eighth in the nation in total defense in 2006 and 14th in 2007 under Martinez.

Martinez was assistant head coach at Central Michigan in 2000.

Rodney Garner, Georgia's defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator who also carries the title of assistant head coach, was the only defensive assistant to survive Wednesday's moves.

Asked if Garner is a candidate as defensive coordinator, Richt said "We have not talked about that at this point."

Richt said he will give the three assistants time to consider the offer to coach in the bowl game.

you know, against pokey state, the person who was the least prepared to face them was their quarterback.

Georgia has my vote for underachiever of the decade. That's a lot of talent to end up with two conference titles and no MNC appearances.

This. Look at any NFL roster and you'll likely find at least one UGA player. The list of major contributors from that program is pretty impressive ... Hines Ward, Champ Bailey, Ben Watson, Thomas Davis, Charles Grant, Will Witherspoon, Mohamed Massaquoi, Asher Allen (Vikes), as well as two 2009 1st round picks in Stafford and Moreno. The point is they have probably done less with more than most any other team.

My soon to be in-laws are huge Georgia fans and agree that Joe Cox (the UGA QB) but he was a 5th year senior and their true freshman, who will start next year, wasn't ready yet. But they have been griping about the D-coordinator for years now and are quite happy about this bit of info

Interesting about Fabris. Back in 2005 when Pelini left, Stoops hired Fabris to coach defensive backs or defensive ends (one or the other) and special teams. Fabris changed his mind and returned to Georgia be with his ailing father, and that is when we hired Chris Wilson.

you know, with the number of times that this has happened over the last decade you'd think someone might get a clue.

Out of everyone fired this year, Mark Richt wasn't as bad as Weis, but Kraggy had a huge rebuilding job to do, and who cares about Memphis... and Bowden was forced into retirement, sooooo....

One more year. If you guys don't do SOMEthing soon, it's time to look elsewhere for your program leader.

So should I infer that Stoops should blame one or more of his coach's for this season's disappointment?
Is that the point of this thread?

Richt has a tough job, especially given he's playing among other MNC-contending programs in the SEC. He's no Bob Stoops, but he's pretty damn good. When you're forced to get rid of something that's been 'oh-so-close but no cigar,' one of two things happen. You spiral further downward ala Tommy Tubberville and Bobby Bowden, or you turn it around ala Mack Brown. Cases of Tubberville, Fulmer, Bowden and the like FAAAAAAAAAR outnumber the Mack Brown scenarios.

I was getting ready to say something on this too ron...

I think it more infers that Bob is afraid to fire anyone.

Which is a crock of ****...

Excellent point. I know Georgia fans who are happy about this too, but I think a house cleaning like this is bad news long-term.

I'd also like to point out that Mark Richt didn't fire coworkers..he fired employees. It's not an equal partnership.
