Thanks for the info, Really hope we get stills, but would love White too. I think the best player left that we are pursuing is probably tony jefferson. Will be interesting to see where he ends up.

I have some mixed feelings about Newton. I know he was highly recruited out of high school, and OU was one place that was high on his list. Outside of any character issues, he might have, I think his presence on the roster would provide another experienced QB for 2010.

However, I'm not sure what his eligibility is? If he's a junior, would he be here to ride the pine and provide depth, or to compete for a starting position? Would his presence scare off Blake Bell or Drew Allen?

While I would like having an extra guy to help push Landry and the other guys, does bringing in Cam Newton serve any purpose? Are we set at QB without him?

adoniijahsooner

I think the reason we are even recruiting him, is due to maybe the uncertainty of Landry. Also, it appears we are starting to recruit alot of mobile qb's.

Blake bell is the future? I thought landry was the future lol. I thought bomar was our future a few years back. Where did that Bradford kid come from? Point is that you never know how these kids will turn out till the actually get here and start playing in the system. Let's be careful who we "annoint" as the future.

I have to rethink my previous post as I wasn't really aware of Newton's measurables. Sounds like a Josh Freeman kind of guy - and a really different kind of QB than we usually have on campus. I like the idea of having a kid who gives us a little something extra, and it does seem like that pattern of guy we're starting to go after with Bell and Thompson is more toward the direction of turning the position into something a little more versatile.

I still like the Sam Bradford type (don't we all). Seriously, a guy who thinks and reacts with his arm first and feet second is best. Requires you to cover the whole field.

I don't think we are going in any new direction. Bomar, White, and Thompson were all very good athletes. Bell and Thompson are definitely pass-first guys. They are going to plug them into the system.

Why do high profile high school players try to make recruiting and signing day into a damn soap opera? Just pick the school you like, thank the others for considering you, and go play ball. The last thing I want to see is another stupid-*** hat picking ploy to get attention, followed by the player either not being as good as they thought they were or being an ***-hat and getting suspended or kicked off the team.

Oh and f*** Deion Sanders.

westcoast_sooner
12/12/2009, 12:12 AM
Widescreen - I'm not sure where you're coming from with that comment. Did you look at the video? You're thinking of our offense as a static entity. But think about having a "built-in" Wildcat with this guy in the backfield, OR he can hand to DeMarco, OR he can throw to the flat, the out, or downfield, or with a big boy set, we can run a QB sneak or QB draw - with Finch we can run the shovel pass or .... the possibilities are endless with a guy of Newton's talent.

Can he execute? I don't know. But seriously, when you look at what he was able to do at a JC level - granted, Newton isn't a JC guy - if he can do some of that, we'll win some games with him as a weapon.

Does anyone know how Newton's visit went today? We would be stupid not to go after this kid. I read someone say Bell is our future that may be true but newton could be our now. This would be a great situation for Bell for the simple fact who better to learn from than Newton. Look at the big picture Newton is college ready and Bell is not.

Newton is an uber stud. We recruited him coming out of HS, too, but he ended up at UF first. Then he got into some trouble, went to Blinndergarten, now we are back into it. I still say we go hard after Newton and get him on the field in multiple different ways, not least of which as a TE/WR. Guy's got skill. And we need to have multiple backups at QB as we have seen the last few years.

Game, set, match! IMHO, the fact that he didn't already commit to MSU speaks volumes. This kid is a winner, and knows that he has a better shot, by light years, to win here versus in Starkville or Manhattan. Also, if I remember correctly, MSU already has a kid on campus who does the same thing that he does.

yeah the kid's name is Tyler Russel from Meridian, MS. he was the prize recruit from last year's class and last year's Mr. Football in MS. his team won state last year and beat South Panola for the title, which was riding an 88 game winning streak so he's pretty talented but i'm still sure that Mullen would love to have newton back to help (i.e. he's experienced, russell redshirted this year) so we'll see.

From the Tulsa World--he is compared to Vince Young:

Newton is seriously talented. He’s 6-foot-6, 245 pounds and is a true dual-threat — run or pass. … Newton’s speed and agility have been called crazy good and his arm is amazing. It’s no stretch to see why some called him the next Vince Young when he was in high school.
Sooner fans could know sooner than later. Newton is a mid-term enrollee, which means he’ll be on a campus somewhere by Dec. 20.

Being from Georgia where he played for Westlake HS and only 3 1/2 to 4 hours away from UF, I've seen a lot more media on this guy than I assume you guys have.

He did the Sooner Nation a favor when he signed with Auburn !!!!!

I watched him in his last HS game against our local high school and 2 plays stood out to me. The first one was he ran out of bounds to avoid contact 8 yards behind the line of scrimmage, he was basically running backwards to get away from it and he was atleast 6'6" 225 pounds then.
The second play was when he threw the ball out of bounds as he rolled out to avoid contact on 4th down with about a minute left in the game near mid-field trailing by 7. He either was tired of being hit and didn't care or he had no idea of the down.

They need to come see this kid, he'll be a senior next season. I've watched him play every game in the last 2 seasons and he is the real deal (check out the schools who have offered him), he also comes from real good parents.

Ray would be more in the 250/255 pound range, but he also plays basketball and keeps it off.

I really hope we make White regret his decision. As in, I hope we can win the next four or five RRS. That would be nice.

Maybe he'll follow TFRW's footsteps:
