OK, let's be honest here. Oklahoma, for good or bad depending on your viewpoint, is one of the most gay-unfriendly places in the Western world.

If you are protesting the State of Oklahoma for its acceptance of homosexuality, it's like protesting Oklahoma for not giving enough votes to John McCain (all 77 counties), or protesting Nevada for not supporting casino gambling, or protesting New Orleans for not supporting Mardi Gras.

In other words, it's beyond stupid.

These are the SCUM who protest at the funerals of our Fallen Heroes. I have "encountered" them on several occassions while with PGR Riders. I know that the first instinct is to beat their sorry asses into the ground, but the best way to deal with them is to ignore them.

Are these the same guys that were at the TCU game a couple years back?
I kind of enjoyed the banter from the crowd who seemed more knowledgeable about scripture.
But nobody tells my wife that she is going to hell. Bikers would have to take a back seat to her in that situation.
Knowing that these guys are the ones that 'show up' at military funerals will make it all the harder for me to lead her away

The way I kind of understand it is -it's not just Oklahoma - the entire country is out fighting wars to promote homosexuality and the death of a serviceman or woman is some sort of retribution from God.

His church is one of those that say the deaths of members of our military is part of God's vengeance on the US for being too accepting of homosexuals, and that we deserve it.

It is not that they are anti-military. They feel that soldiers represent a government that supports homosexuality. They have signs that say stuff like Fag Army or Fag Soldiers. They do it for shock value mostly and to get attention for their message. I am not supporting them in anyway but I kind of feel bad for them because of how ****ed up they are. Something has to be wrong with these people to do the things they do. They had a HBO Documentary on them and they have had daughters run away because they wanted to live a different life. They were cut off like they were excommunicated from the Catholic Church! At a protest one of the kids who could not have been older than 8 or 9 got hit with a Route 44 drink from Sonic. I felt bad for the little Ranga!

These people sicken me!

First, as a 2-tour Iraq vet, and having friends of mine get killed over there (most who were Christian), to protest a funeral, no matter your beliefs, is just wrong. One would figure that after how we awfully treated our returning vets, some morons would have learned their lessons. In that case, it was the left-wing hippies who were protesting, now, it is far-right fundamentalists. Second, this moron and his minions claim to be Baptist. As a fellow, life-long Baptist, it disgusts me with their behavior. My uncle, who was up until his retirement a couple of years ago the longest tenured Baptist Minister in Oklahoma, can't stand this guy either. They ostracized him from regional association meetings. Unfortunately, it's guys like Phelps who give most good, loving, honorable, practicing Christians a bad name.

You have to read a lot to even comprehend what they are trying to say. I'm still not sure I understand, but I'm guessing "we need to persecute gays and gay supporters to the max or god will be pissed". Regardless, if a message isn't short and clear, Americans with their short attention spans will never understand. But they will understand disrupting military funerals and they won't like it.

I think this Phelps guy displays closet gay with shame behavior. He just takes it to a new level.

Like I said, the best part about this situation (and admittedly, the situation still sucks) is that they are going to be at the OU campus, where they will be ignored.

They won't be at some military funeral rejoicing in the loss of someone's life, which will cause other people great pain and sadness.

Instead, they will be among the crimson (and possibly a little orange), getting ignored.

We are getting a mild headache in exchange for giving military families the chance to celebrate their fallen son's or daughter's life. Yay, us!

Excellent post, you are right on the money. Have you read the book UnChristian? The research shows that groups like Phelps flock are giving Christians in general a poor image among the 19-29 yr old generation. They see the "God hates fags" sings and think all Christians are into judgementalism and hate mongering rather than being Christ followers and bringing more brotherly love into the world.

Phelps has freedom of speech and religion like everyone else, but his extreme views are bordering on criminality.

Hope everyone who deals with him, takes the high road this weekend.

Er? Why is that stooping to some level? I just stated what the behavior looks like to me. Reminds me of that Ted Haggard guy in Colorado Springs. Why would a closet gay rise to be the leader of an anti-gay church unless there is some deep seated shame? Since I have nothing against gays (closet or otherwise), I don't see this as stooping to a low level, sorry. I do see disrupting a funeral as stooping about as low as you can get.

I'll buy that. But whether Phelps is secretly gay or has a gay kid or his dad didn't go to his little league games or he has mommy issues, something is scrambled in that man's gray matter. Someone is messed up when they let some issue become an irrational obsession that consumes their lives. If he really was worried about gods wrath against a gay friendly nation, he could just move to Iran. Ahmadinejad proclaimed that Iran does not even have any gay people - Phelps would be welcomed with open arms there.

And no, rooting for OU doesn't mean we secretly pull for the horns - not a good analogy.

I am taking my daughter to the game for her 21st Bday....didn't know it would be a double feature ;)

Question: Didn't OU add something to the student code a few years back to regulate "trespassers" on campus????

I seriously doubt that that would be enforceable on a game day where all sorts of people (with or without tickets) and allowed on campus. If you tried to enforce some trespassing law it would be clear to any court that the true reason is an attempt to limit free speech.

Maybe you could make that case on a normal school day and they might do just.

I have always felt that something is good if you are doing it to the glory of God. Is cussing for the glory of God? No...Is anything about their message and cause for the glory of God? I cannot imagine God condoning hurting other people with the kinds of signs they make! Those are terrible signs and they are worse than the most offensive curse words!

That one sign in the video that said "God Hates Cripple Soldiers" is just idiotic! I wanna see them face a solider who has been hurt in battle or the family of a soldier who is crippled. This claim is always a red flag for me. Bin Laden claims everything he does or encourages is for the glory of god. There doesn't seem to be a good set of rules for using that claim for me to understand. I admit I'm a simpleton though.
