They must've had a big lead. Running that kind of play from inside the one yard line is stupid.

I can think of about 15 times this season when it would have been a better call than the one we tried inside the 5 yard line.

I just doodled this up specifically for this thread.

We actually did 3 straight shovel passes out of that formation against aTm in '99 and they all went for big gainers. ArCee finally got wise and called a timeout. :D

Well, Mikey did clearly write on the play that he is to "throw," even if that means the pass is shovel-worthy, then call the play shovelware ;)

I must admit, I doodled this up without actually ever seeing the ninja. NP described it to me when he saw the pics I posted for some thread about the greatest photo under Stoops and he said 99 should have been "The Ninja Formation."

I bet it drove more coaches mad than Arcee. :rcmad:

Had that been incomplete, you'd think it should have been ruled a fumble since he technically pitched it backwards. Which I realize is stupid, but then again it is a pretty stupid play to begin with.

Check this out. The ninja at the :55 mark. Wish the video quality was better. That game had it all - ninja, fake punts, hook-and-laterals. That was fun. And little Michael Thornton was pretty good - too bad he got hurt. Even Skinner looked good. I remember after the game, ArCee said something like "This was supposed to be a shootout but we just got shot." :D

1999 was a lot of fun. I would love to relive that season.

The funny thing is, even though our record was only 2 games better than in '98, I felt SO much better about the team. We led in every game and were competitive. And we generally got the right # of players on the field. There was so much more organization that I knew things would turn around - although I admit i wasn't predicting an MNC the next year.

thanks for the video, widescreen. the ninja looks like a clusterf... more than anything else, but I'm sure that after the boo blake years that it was fun to watch some positive yardage plays.

We have that kind of game all the time now, but everyone is so used to it that nobody gets excited...

When did it stop being fun, and start being business?

For A&M, the Ninja WAS a CF. But it was a gimmick - I think we tried it one other time after that A&M game and it got stuffed hard.

(That's what SHE said.)

Anyway, that behind-the-back alley-oop pass is sweet, but I disagree about the insanity of that play. It would be insanity to try it anywhere EXCEPT at the one-yard line...

I just can't wait for Dave Lapham to tell me about the wide splits on the Tech O-line as if he has discovered something.
